Bill would protect employees who refuse to get COVID-19 vaccine

WBAL Reports state lawmakers are tackling the issue of COVID-19 vaccinations and whether Marylanders should be required to get them. A proposed bill would protect both employees and employers when it comes to the vaccine.

The bill, known as the Maryland Employee Protection Plan for Vaccine Refusal, is timely as companies consider mandating vaccinations as a condition of employment, and it protects employers from worker lawsuits.

The legislation provides some vaccination breathing room: Those who don't feel comfortable just yet getting the vaccine will not have to fear being fired, and employers will not be saddled with lawsuits if the unvaccinated get sick on the job.

Prince George's County Delegate Nick Charles, D-District 25, came up with the idea after talking with his constituents, retailers, CEOs and union officials.

"I think it is a total wrap bill that protects everybody across the board. I think it's fair," Charles said.

The emergency bill also applies to state and local governments. According to the U.S. Equal Employment
