Buckel, Moore Discuss Standard Deduction

March 3rd, 2025 by WCBC Radio

When Governor Wes Moore testified before a joint committee in Annapolis about his proposed budget, close attention was paid to his tax reform ideas.  Of particular interest to House Minority Leader Jason Buckel was concerns about doubling the standard deduction for taxpayers, though there was agreement on other points…

“I think we share some of the common goals, but we can’t vote for things that the experts statistically come back and tell us that one out of every three families making $100-200,000– their taxes are going to go up.”

Governor Moore countered by saying he also has experts saying it will work well…

“I can show you expert analysis and that’s both from progressive and also from conservative think-tanks that talk about the importance of the standard deduction and actually how that will have an economic benefit to more Marylanders. Because we are focusing on that standard deduction and not necessarily on the itemized because you have a smaller number of people that are using itemized deduction for their tax filing.”
