The Cumberland Times News reports a bystander was credited Monday with rescuing an 11-year-old child who became submerged in water at a Rocky Gap State Park beach early Sunday afternoon. According to Natural Resources Police the child was taken to UPMC Western Maryland as a precaution following the 12:40 p.m. incident with transport made by a Flintstone Volunteer Fire Department ambulance that was staffed by an Allegany County Department of Emergency Services crew.

"Fortunately a bystander was able to rescue the child," said NRP spokeswoman Lauren Moses.

The bystander, who was not identified, also reportedly performed rescue efforts that removed water from the child’s stomach.

"The child was deemed OK but was taken to a nearby medical center as a precaution," said Moses.
