City Man Charged with First Degree Murder in South Cumberland Shooting

On Wednesday, May 4, 2022, at 1:51 pm the Cumberland Police Department and Cumberland Fire Department responded to the area of Memorial Avenue and First Street in Cumberland for a report of a shooting.  Upon arrival, officers discovered 20-year-old Travon Lee Morris, age 20, of Cumberland suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.  Bystanders and first responders immediately initiated life saving measures and the victim was transported to the hospital; however, he later succumbed to his injuries. 

While conducting the investigation at the scene several witnesses identified a suspect who had fled on foot.  Cumberland Police Officers with the help of Allegany County Sheriff’s Deputies, Maryland State Troopers and Natural Resource Police Officers then began a search of the area and later located the suspect identified as Gavin Wayne Huckabay, age 20, in the area of Wempe Drive where he was placed into custody. 

Detectives from the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit assisted by Maryland State Police Detectives and Crime Lab Technicians responded to investigate further.  As a result of the investigation Gavin Wayne Huckabay, age 20, of Cumberland was charged with first degree murder.  At the time of this press release Huckabay is awaiting his initial appearance. 

“This incident is a terrible tragedy; our thoughts go out to the families involved.   The police department is appreciative of all the help that the community gave us as well as our partner public safety agencies in bringing this matter to a quick resolution.  This appears to be an isolated incident which resulted in the arrest of the suspect without any other danger to the community.”
