October 28th, 2021 by WCBC Radio

Cumberland Police Chief John ‘Chuck’ Ternent announced today that a team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) will be conducting a virtual assessment of the Cumberland Police Department the week of November 1, 2021 to examine aspects of the department’s policies and procedures, management, operations, and support services.  The team will verify the Cumberland Police Department meets the Commission’s state of the art standards that are part of a voluntary process to gain accreditation; a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence.

The assessment team is comprised of law enforcement practitioners from similar out of state agencies.  The assessors will review written materials and conduct interviews.  The assessors are Deputy Chief Christopher Ciuci of the Berlin, Connecticut Police Department and Mr. John Tucker, retired from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

As part of the on-site assessment, agency employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public hearing on Tuesday, November 2, 2021 at 6:00 PM.  The hearing will be through Google Meet and the link can be found on the Cumberland Police Department’s web page at https://www.ci.cumberland.md.us/253/Police-Department or the Cumberland Police Department Facebook page.  For those who do not have internet access and would like to participate in the hearing, those individuals may come to the Cumberland Police Department where they will be provided access to the hearing to provide comments.  If for some reason an individual is not available to speak at the public information session but would like to provide comments to the assessment team, they may do so by telephoning 301-759-6532 between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM on Tuesday November 2, 2021 or by sending an email to cpd-calea@cumberlandmd.gov.

Telephone comments as well as appearances at the public information hearing session are limited to 10 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA standards.  Anyone having questions as to the content of the standards may contact Accreditation Manager, Sgt. Chris Golliday, at 301-759-6471.  Persons wishing to offer written comments about the Cumberland Police Department’s ability to meet the standards for accreditation may write:  Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc.
