City Police Make Theft Arrest

On July 6th, 2017 officer of the Cumberland Police Department were called to the 600 block of Fayette St for a report of a subject stealing mail packages from residences.  Upon arrival the officers spoke to the complainant who advised that he observed a white male run onto the porch of a residence and take a package.  The suspect then fled down the street.  The suspect, identified as Deron Elbin 42 years old of Cumberland, MD was located a short distance away by another officer.  When he saw the officer, Elbin attempted to flee, however he was detained.

Upon further investigation, officers were able to obtain video footage of Elbin stealing the package and also learned that he had stolen additional packages.  Elbin was searched and several stolen items were recovered.  Elbin was placed under arrest and taken before the District Court Commissioner.  He is currently being held on a $1,500  bond at the Allegany County Detention Center.

Charges:  Fourth Degree Burglary,  Theft Less than $1,000

On May 11, 2017 at approximately 11:00 PM the Cumberland Police responded to a business in the 400 block of Virginia Avenue for a shoplifting complaint.  Upon arrival police learned that an employee witnessed a female, later identified as Karen Lee Jeffries, open a bag of potato chips and began eating them without paying for them.  The employee was able to get the bag of chips and Jeffries left the store.  Police were able to locate Jeffries a short time later in the area of Fourth Street and placed her under arrest.  She was issued a criminal citation for Theft Under $100 and released pending trial in District Court.

Karen Lee Jeffries, age:  38, Cumberland, MD

Charges:  Theft Under $100
