Concord Sweeps Volleyball in Road Match to Open MEC Play

Frostburg State volleyball team fell on the road to Concord in three sets on Friday night. 

Play opened with Concord serving and winning the first point of the game. The next point went to the Bobcats on a kill from senior Beverly Braun. FSU took the first two-point lead of the first set at 6-4 on a kill from junior AJ Thompson. The Bobcats stretched the early lead to 8-4 before CU later evened things at 10-10. FSU again took a lead on a five-point run making things 15-11. Again, the Mountain Lions would pull things back even and then take a late lead. Down 22-20, senior Hayley Delor found the Bobcats' kill leader in Braun for back-to-back FSU points. Freshman Paige Mock picked up a kill to escape a set point and tie things at 24-24. Concord would take the last two points, however, and the first set 26-24.

The Bobcats would respond to start the second set with kills from freshman Maddie Lewis and sophomore Amanda Knieper for an early 4-1 lead. FSU would have an advantage in the second set until the score came to 12-12. Concord would pull momentum to its side ,taking a lead and never looking back on their way to a 25-19 win.

Lewis came out with two early kills in the third set for FSU, as the teams exchanged points with early ties at 3-3 and 6-6. Two Concord errors and a kill from both Lewis and Thompson made for another tie at 15 points each. Braun had two late kills before the set went to the Mountain Lions at 25-20 after another late CU.

Frostburg was led by Braun with 12 kills and Knieper one behind at 11. Delor had 38 assists over the three sets to go along with 10 digs. Junior Fiona Gonzalez Medina picked up 16 digs with Braun also having 10.

With the loss, the Bobcats move to 7-7 overall while Concord improves to 10-3. The Bobcats will play again on Tuesday, September 26 when they host Salem (WV) in Bobcat Arena at 7 PM. For more information visit frostburgsports.com
