County Claims FEMA is Playing “Political Football”

September 19th, 2025 by WCBC Radio

Allegany County has spent $3.4 million towards flood relief since the May 13th flood.  County Administrator Jason Bennett told the County Commissioners at Thursday night's meeting that if FEMA denies their request again, and if state funds are unavailable, the County will have to pull what they can from elsewhere…

“We’ve tapped out all of our lottery proceeds—they’re gone.  Everything from here on out will be unexpended fund balance, and if nothing comes in at all, we’ll have to start talking about doing the borrowing.”

Commissioner Creade Brodie said at this point the federal and state levels are playing games…

“This is just being used as a big political football somewhere between Annapolis and D.C. which is a damn shame.  We’re spending every penny we have, and there’s programs in place to help with stuff like this, but we can’t get nothin’ because of an argument.”
