Cumberland Police Make Burglary & Assault Arrests

On Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at approximately 3:45 PM, officers from the Cumberland Police Department were called to a W. Second Street residence in reference to a breaking and entering in progress.  Upon the officers’ arrival, they observed the front door of the residence to be open.  Officers contacted four suspects inside the residence.  It was discovered that the rear door of the residence had been kicked in by one of the suspects.  Through investigation, police determined that none of the people had permission to be inside the residence.  Three of the suspects were identified as Debra Johnson, Vickie Kibler, and Katherine Merica.  They were arrested and transported to police headquarters.  They were taken before the District Court Commissioner for bond hearings.  Johnson was held at the Allegany County Detention Center on a $3,000 bond.  Kibler and Merica were released on their personal recognizance. The fourth suspect (juvenile) was also arrested and then later released to a guardian.

ARRESTED:  Katherine Theresa Rose Merica     AGE:  38    Shenandoah, VA

CHARGES:  Burglary-3rd Degree, Burglary-4th Degree

 

ASSAULT ARREST

 

On Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at approximately 10:16 AM, the Cumberland Police Department responded to an Independence Street residence in reference to a domestic assault.  Upon the officers’ arrival, they contacted the alleged victim who reported that he was assaulted by the suspect, John McDaniel.  The victim explained that he had been arguing with another person in the residence when McDaniel told him that he (victim) needed to leave and that he was kicking him out.  The victim stated that he began arguing with McDaniel and McDaniel ended up throwing him down the stairs.  The victim sustained minor injuries.  McDaniel was arrested and taken before the District Court Commissioner where he was released on his personal recognizance.

On May 17, 2017 at 11:50 am, officers from the Cumberland Police Department responded to the 300 block of Independence St. for a burglary in progress. When officers arrived, they found a rear window ajar and set up a perimeter around the property.  Officers further contacted the property owners and found that no one was supposed to be inside the residence.  Officers then gained entry through the window. Once inside, a subject identified as Cierra Wilt, age 23, of Cumberland, MD exited the front door.  Wilt was taken into custody without incident and charged with 4th Degree Burglary and Trespassing on Private Property. She was later taken to District Court for her Initial Appearance held on $4000 Bond.

 

Assault

On May 17, 2017 at 5:20 pm, officers responded to Belleve St. for a disturbance. Upon arrival officers made contact with a subject identified as Jonnie Bettis, age 36, Cumberland, MD. Officers were initially able to calm the situation and left the area.  At 5:43 pm, officers were again called back to the residence for another disturbance. While investigating the second incident, officers learned that Bettis had been involved in another disturbance and an assault had occurred.  Officers located Bettis and he was placed under arrest. Bettis was charged with 2nd Degree Assault and Failing to Obey a Lawful Order. He was later taken for his Initial Appearance at District Court and held on $3000 Bond.
