Cumberland Resident Believes He Was Profiled in Traffic Stop

July 24th, 2018 by WCBC Radio

Last week we reported on a traffic stop that involved 62-year old James Wormack, an African American, who believes he may have been pulled over because he is black.

Allegany County Sheriff Craig Robertson doesn’t believe the stop was racially motivated, and Cumberland Police Chief Charles Hinnant says he won’t be able to comment until hearings are conducted in accordance with the Police Officer’s Bill of Rights.

On Monday, Wormack told WCBC’s Dave Norman the current version of the code says he shouldn’t have been pulled over for just having a graduation tassel on his rearview mirror…

      > He is a man who isn’t acting his age. He sounded like he is still 45 years younger aka a immature teen compared to being an adult especially someone who is supposed to be a wise person. People say respect elders to teenagers but he surely isn’t acting like an elder. So he is a victim but not due to race. He was pulled over for a idiot reason. He isn’t helping by using the race card. I hope he wins but he be forced to apologies for falsely calling the deputy a racist.

How is a tassel a distraction. Guy didn’t need to use the race card. The 62 year old needs to grow up

Cumberland resident James Wormack, a 61 year old African American, was recently pulled over for a minor traffic violation, and has sent a letter to Allegany County Sheriff Craig Robertson and Cumberland Police Chief Charles Hinnant saying he believes the stop was made because he is black.  Wormack talked about the stop with WCBC’s Dave Norman, saying he was initially stopped for having his daughter’s graduation tassel dangling from his mirror, which was interpreted as causing an obstruction…

Hinnant said the initial stop was made by the Sheriff’s Department, but outlined what normal procedure would be for his department.

Allegany County Sheriff Craig Robertson is out of the office and tells WCBC that he will not comment until he reviews the incident.
