On Tuesday, July 19, 2022 at approximately 12:40 AM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to eastbound Industrial Blvd. at Thomas Street for a disabled vehicle in the roadway. It was reported that the occupants had left the area. Officers arrived on scene and learned that the vehicle had been reported stolen on July 17, 2022. Officers spoke with witnesses who provided a description of the suspect and direction of travel. The suspect was located on Virginia Avenue and was eventually identified as Edem Akakpo. Akakpo initially provided a false identity to officers. After further investigation, Akakpo was placed under arrest and transported to the police station for processing. Officers learned that Akakpo also had an active bench warrant out of Washington County after determining his true identity. He was later seen by a District Court Commissioner and remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center on a $1,500 bond. Akakpo had a bail review this morning and was released on a $3,000 unsecured personal bond.
