At at approximately 427 Friday morning, a 2006 Volvo tractor trailer, operated by a 58 year old white male, of Brown Deer, WI, was traveling E/B I-68 approaching the 2 mile marker. At that time, for unknown reasons, the Volvo traveled off of the roadway and into the center median. The driver was able to maintain control of the vehicle and drive it back onto the roadway, but sustained damage to the air hose. The driver then drove the Volvo across I-68 to the right shoulder. The trailer, however, was still partially in lane 2. As the driver was out of the Volvo setting up emergency triangles, a 2011 Kia, operated by Phillip Mitchell, 28 year old white male of Upper Marlboro, MD, approached in lane 2. The 2011 Kia struck the rear portion of the trailer and traveled underneath where it came to final rest. Mitchell was trapped inside of the vehicle and discovered to be deceased upon arrival of McHenry Barrack Troopers.  Mitchell was the sole occupant of the Kia. The collision is being investigated by the Maryland State Police, McHenry Barrack.  The investigation is ongoing. Resources: Friendsville Fire Dept, Northern Garrett Rescue Squad, MSP McHenry Barrack,  and Forensic investigator assisted with the investigation.

All lanes of E/B Interstate 68 at the scene of the collision were closed from 0427 a.m.  to 0750 a.m.
