Maryland State Troopers are investigating a fatal traffic crash that occurred Tuesday evening on I-70 near the Washington-Frederick County line.
The crash occurred at about 6:43 PM on eastbound I-70 near the 38 mile marker in Washington County, just west of the Frederick County line on South Mountain. Troopers from the MSP Hagerstown Barrack, along with fire and EMS units from both Washington and Frederick Counties responded to the four vehicle collision. Crash reconstructionists from the MSP Crash Team also responded to assist.
Investigation revealed that a tractor-trailer owned by Clouse Trucking, Inc., of Carlisle, Pa., became disabled and had stopped on the right shoulder. A Dodge pickup truck owned by the same company had been sent to make repairs to the tractor-trailer, and was also stopped on the right shoulder. As the trucking company employees were finished up the repairs, a 2013 Chrysler 200, which had been operated by Adam C. Gammon, 37, of Bethel Rd., Frederick, also became disabled and stopped on the right shoulder behind the trucks.
Gammon directed his 12 year old daughter to get in the driver’s seat of the Chrysler and steer it while he and his 11 year old son pushed the car forward. Gammon told his daughter to steer the car into the right traffic lane of I-70 to drive around the two trucks, so the car would coast forward. When she turned the car into the traffic lane, a 2012 Ford Taurus, driven by 36 year old Guruprasad P. Bandekar in the right lane, struck Gammon and the rear of the Chrysler at highway speed. Both the Chrysler and the Ford proceeded forward and struck the tractor-trailer driver, Gary B. Kauffman, 56, of Mapleville Rd., Hagerstown, and the other trucking company employee, 60 year old Edward A. Sechrist, of Warm Springs Rd., Chambersburg, Pa., who were on foot standing on the shoulder by the tractor-trailer.
Gammon was pronounced dead at the scene, and both of his children, both truck company employees, and Bandekar, the Ford driver, were transported by ambulance to the Trauma Unit of Meritus Medical Center east of Hagerstown for treatment of their injuries.
Eastbound I-70 was completely closed for almost 4 hours while the crash was investigated and the scene was cleared. Traffic was detoured off at Exit 32 (US 40/Dual Hwy) and directed eastward into Frederick County to return to I-70. State Highway Administration personnel and volunteer fire police assisted with road closures and the detour.

Maryland State Police are investigating a Tuesday morning vehicle crash on I-70 that resulted in one fatality.
At 8:53 AM, the Washington County 911 Center received calls reporting that a vehicle slid into the center median of I-70, near the 10 mile marker, and was on fire. Troopers from the Hagerstown Barrack of the Maryland State Police, along with local fire and EMS companies, were immediately dispatched to the scene.
An off-duty MSP flight paramedic was on scene within minutes, and with the help of two citizens, pulled the driver and sole occupant of the 1997 Audi passenger car, who had been partially ejected, away from the burning vehicle. The driver, 22 year old Dallas Lee Miller of New Holland, Pa., received severe, traumatic injuries in the crash, and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The initial investigation revealed that Miller was driving his vehicle westbound on I-70 and had just passed two other motorists near the 10 mile marker, when he lost control on slippery roads. His vehicle skidded off the road and into the center median, where it struck a tree and partially ejected Miller from the vehicle.
