Footer Dye Works Continues To Be Point Of Contention

November 22nd, 2012 by WCBC Radio

A recent meeting of former Allegany County Chamber of Commerce presidents featured a discussion on the best course of action for the Canal Place Preservation and Development Authority in regards to the Footer Dye Works building. The aging, yet historic structure has been a point of contention for several years now with some in the community advocating for its demolition, but others wanting to preserve it in hopes of attracting a private developer. There have been mixed messages provided by the Authority and the Maryland Historic Trust when it comes to the idea of tearing it down. Some have said definitively that it cannot be done. Others say it could be, but there is an application process to go through. On Wednesday, Authority Chair Andy Vick said they remain in talks with a developer that could provide an attractive private investment into the structure- however he says if it doesn’t pan out, razing the building could be discussed…

A statement from Doug Reed, the Maryland Historic Trust’s representative on the Canal Place Preservation and Development Authority, calling those for tearing down the Footer Dye Works building has drawn the ire of one local physician. Reed made those comments during the Tuesday meeting of the Authority Board, reacting to recent debate over whether or not to demolish the historic Building. In a letter to the Trust’s Director Rodney Little, Dr Sean McCagh of Cumberland called Reed’s words “arrogant” and “condescending”. He further opined that mothballing the aging structure at a cost of $50,000 seems like a waste of money.  He ends his letter with an invitation for Little to visit Cumberland and to take a tour of the Footer building.
