On Saturday, May 20, 2023, members from the Garrett County law enforcement agencies held the 2023 Garrett County Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run event at the Hickory Environmental Educational Center. Maryland State Police McHenry Barrack Troopers and Maryland Natural Resources Police Officers participated in a 1 mile run/walk event with Special Olympic Athletes along with supporters from the community to raise funds and create awareness for Special Olympics Maryland.
This is one of many Law Enforcement Torch Run events being held by law enforcement agencies in the coming weeks throughout our state, running the torch in their local communities prior to the Special Olympics Maryland Summer Games. Law enforcement officers and athletes carry the “Flame of Hope” that symbolizes courage and the celebration of diversity, unity, and commitment to those with intellectual disabilities from around the globe.
We would like to thank all the Special Olympic Athletes and the community for participating in this event. We would also like to thank the following organizations for their commitment and generosity in making this event successful. Hickory Environmental Educational Center, Ledo Pizza, Hartman’s Liberty, McHenry Shop N’ Save, The Rolling Pin Bakery, Mountain FOP Lodge 40 and Troopers Association, Dale Jones and all the individual officers and other volunteers.
