The City of Hagerstown has passed a temporary ordinance that will make it illegal to sleep or camp in public spaces. The ban goes into effect August 8. According to the Hagerstown Police Department, the rule prohibits people from sleeping or staying overnight in places like sidewalks, parks, city streets, parking lots, public buildings or any publicly owned property. It also bans activities like setting up tents, sleeping bags, or shelters, starting fires, or leaving personal belongings in public areas. Violators could face a fine of up to $500 and/or up to 60 days in jail.
