Historical Society sets calendar, launches membership drive

January 22nd, 2023 by WCBC Radio

The Allegany County Historical Society (ACHS) has launched a 2023 Membership Drive and published the preliminary program calendar for the coming year, according to an announcement from ACHS Vice President Debbie Grimm. In making the announcement, Ms. Grimm noted that ACHS is focused on increasing community involvement in a non-profit organization that dates back to 1937. “Since restarting our post-COVID public programs at Heritage Days in 2021, we have been creating high quality programs and catching up on the condition of our historic facilities. Now we’re turning the corner back to our core mission,” Grimm commented.

In 2023, ACHS will restart two long-running educational programs, the Fourth Friday Tea Series at Gordon-Roberts House and the Hands-On History Discovery Series, aided in the latter effort by a grant from the Canal Place Preservation and Development Authority.

They will continue to stage three fund-raising events launched in 2022, newly named as the ACHS Gala Event Series, and begin a third year as organizers and promoters of the Heritage Days/Wills Creek Muster weekend, set for September 9 and 10, 2023.

“The most important part of the coming year for ACHS is a new commitment to member services and member value,” Grimm continued.

ACHS is assigning a staff member to communicate with members and enrich their experience by providing program discounts, members-only family events and offering a backstage role in collection curation, docent tour training and event staging.

“This is an exciting time for Allegany County as we are finally growing again, and ACHS is committed to making community life more fulfilling for local residents and more attractive to visitors and people considering living here,” Grimm concluded.

The 2023 ACHS Calendar, as well as on-line membership forms and sponsorship opportunities have been published at www.alleganycountyhistory.org and are part of the discussion at two Facebook pages, The Allegany County Historical Society and Western Maryland History.
