Hogan names new chief of staff

Gov. Larry Hogan's former communications director is returning from the private sector to become Hogan's new chief of staff. WBAL reports Matthew Clark will replace Sam Malhotra effective Aug. 15, the governor's office announced Wednesday. Malhotra will go back to the private sector whole also serving as a senior adviser to Hogan on technology and innovation issues. Malhotra joined Hogan first as secretary of the Department of Human Resources from February 2015 to October 2016, when he was appointed chief of staff.

Governor Larry Hogan today announced the appointment of Maryland Department of Human Resources Secretary, Sam Malhotra as Chief of Staff to the Governor, effective October 26. Malhotra will replace current Chief of Staff, Craig A. Williams, Ph.D., who has accepted a senior level position at Johns Hopkins.

“Secretary Malhotra has been a valued member of our cabinet, and I am now very pleased to bring his management expertise directly to my staff,” said Governor Hogan. “I look forward to working with him on a daily basis. I have absolute confidence that he will help further our mission to change Maryland for the better.”

“I am honored to accept this position, and I look forward to continuing to serve Governor Hogan and the people of Maryland,” said Secretary Malhotra. “I share the governor's goal of putting people first and advancing an agenda that will change Maryland for the better. I’m excited to take on this new role in the administration.”
