House Republicans Issue Statement on Comptroller’s Report on Status of Maryland’s School Buildings

September 20th, 2025 by WCBC Radio

House Minority Leader Jason Buckel released the following statement in reaction to Comptroller Brooke Lierman’s report that 80% of Maryland’s school buildings need “repair, renovation, or replacement”: “It is amazing that after increasing our spending on public education by billions of dollars in recent years and Governor Moore and Democrats in Annapolis pushing through the largest combined tax and fee hikes in Maryland history, we still cannot seem to take care of our actual school buildings and facilities in a reasonable way. There is no question that new school construction and renovating existing buildings is needed in many counties—but if the plan is to push more tax raises and create new ‘streams of revenue’ to pay for it instead of prioritizing our spending and trimming back the waste and initiatives that don’t result in better educations for our kids, that’s not right. Our kids and families deserve to come first, and our taxpayers are not an endless piggy bank for the continual expansion of state government and salaries.”
