September 16th, 2021 by WCBC Radio

The Mayor and City Council of Cumberland have announced that Joseph P. George has been selected to fill the council seat vacated recently by Seth Bernard.  The selection was made by the remaining four members of Council after interviewing all ten individuals who submitted letters of interest for the position.

“We are very pleased to announce that Joe George has accepted Council’s nomination to the open council seat,” stated Mayor Raymond Morriss.  “We believe that Joe will bring a breadth of experience and quality leadership with him from his work experience and vast amount of community involvement that will greatly benefit the city, and we look forward to welcoming him to our team.”

Mr. George retired from CBIZ Insurance Services, Inc., (formerly BGS&G) in October of 2016, as President of the Select Services Division after 28 years of service to that company.  A native of the city of Cumberland, he has served in a leadership role on numerous organizations and community service associations, and resides with his wife, Sue, in Cumberland.

Mr. George’s appointment will be formally voted upon by the Mayor and City Council at the September 21, 2021, public meeting and he will be immediately sworn into office by Dawne Lindsey, Allegany County Clerk of the Court.
