Maryland Avenue Stabbing

On Thursday, October 9, 2014 at 9:15 P.M., members of the Cumberland City Police Department were dispatched to the 500 Block of Maryland Avenue, Cumberland, Maryland for a report of a large fight in the street.  Members of the Allegany County Sheriff’s Department and Maryland State Police also responded to the scene.

When Officers arrived, they encountered a large crowd on the street.  Officers learned that there had been an altercation and that a 22 year old male victim had been stabbed in the chest.  The victim was located at private residence located on the 400 Block of Ascension Street, Cumberland, Maryland.  After the victim was stabbed on Maryland Avenue, he went to the Ascension Street residence until Officers arrived on the scene.  Members of the Cumberland Fire Department responded to the scene and treated the victim prior to transporting him to the Western Maryland Health Systems for further treatment of his injuries.

Investigators with the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit (C3I) responded to assist in the investigation. Officers and Investigators interviewed a number of witnesses at the scene.   Video surveillance footage of the altercation was also obtained.  The altercation had initially begun in a parking lot of a business located on the 500 block of Maryland Avenue.  Four individuals were initially involved in the physical altercation.  The individuals continued to fight as they were traveling on foot on the 500 block of Maryland Avenue.  During the altercation, the suspect pulled out a knife and stabbed the 22 year old victim in the chest.

As a result of statements from the victim and witnesses, 19 year old Jonthan Edward Harriss of Cumberland, Maryland was arrested at the scene. Review of the video footage also revealed that Jonthan Harriss stabbed the 22 year old victim with a knife.  During altercation, Jonathan Harriss also punched a 24 year old male victim in the face..

   Harriss has been criminally charged with Attempted 2nd Degree Murder, 1st Degree Assault, two (2) counts of 2nd Degree Assault, Affray and Reckless Endangerment.  Upon complete of processing, Harriss will be taken before a District Court Commissioner for a bond hearing.

The scene was processed by members of the Maryland State Police Crime Lab.  

 Investigation is continuing.

A stabbing in the 400 block of Maryland Avenue Friday night sent one person to the hospital and another person behind bars.  Cumberland City Police responded at approximately 11:15 for the report of a fight in progress.  Erik Damon Baker, 25, of Cumberland, was charged with 1st and 2nd degree assault and was held on $10,000 bond.
