Maryland Commerce Secretary Announces Gubernatorial Bid

April 15th, 2021 by WCBC Radio

Maryland Commerce Secretary Kelly Schulz has announced her candidacy for governor in 2022.

"This past year has been incredibly tough for all of us. But the perseverance I have seen from Marylanders has been nothing less than awe-inspiring," Schulz said in an announcement posted on Facebook. "It's the resilience, the strength, and the will to overcome that inspired me to run for governor."

Schulz joined Gov. Larry Hogan's administration in 2015 as secretary of the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation before he nominated her in 2019 to become the secretary of commerce. The Frederick Republican previously served in the House of Delegates. She also worked in real estate and was part-owner of a cyber-security firm.

Lt. Gov. Boyd Rutherford on Wednesday ruled out a bid to succeed Hogan, who is term-limited.
