Maryland was ranked the fifth most expensive state based on monthly costs, according to a 2025 Cost of Bills Index from bill pay service doxo. The index, which breaks down comparative household costs across the U.S., focused on what it ranked as the 13 most common bill categories:
- Mortgage
- Rent
- Auto Loan
- Gas
- Electric
- Water and sewer
- Waste and recycling
- Auto insurance
- Cable, Internet and phone
- Health insurance
- Mobile phone
- Alarm and security
- Life insurance
That is quantified into a number that comes in above or below a standard national median of 100. Maryland's index came in at 122, which was 22% above the national median, and a total of $2,505 in monthly costs. Only California, Hawaii, New Jersey, and Massachusetts came in ranked higher.
