Maryland Senate Approves Police Accountability Bill

April 1st, 2021 by WCBC Radio

The Maryland Senate has advanced a far-reaching police reform measure already passed by the House of Delegates amid strong criticism from opponents, who warn that passage of the bill into law could result in officers quiiting the force.

One provision could cause an officer to forfeit his or her pension for committing a felony or perjury. The bill also mandates mental health screening for officers.

Supporters say law enforcement officers must be held responsible for their behavior.

Senators debated the bill late Wednesday night and into Thursday morning before giving the measure preliminary approval.
