Mayor Says New Chief Has Experience, Respect

October 9th, 2025 by WCBC Radio

Tuesday evening brought the swearing in of Cumberland’s new City Police Chief, James Pyles.  Pyles comes to the job after serving most recently as head of Allegany County Emergency Services. Mayor Ray Morriss tells WCBC that Pyles brings a mature background in law enforcement and familiarity with the area…

“Jim Pyles has a presence. He’s very well-spoken, he’s got a history in his life of the great things he’s done in law enforcement, both with the Maryland State Police, all across the state. I really think that he’s going to be an excellent choice to be the leader of our police force. I think the kind of leader that people respect, the kind of leader that people want to work with.”
