Frostburg State men's wrestling team competed in the Virginia Duals over the past two days, picking up three team wins at the duals and scoring 119 total points.
On day one the Bobcatsm opened up against Division I Liberty. The opening match went to the Flames in a close decision 6-4 before the first of three weight class wins for FSU went to junior Thierno Diallo with an 18-0 tech fall. Freshman Gage Heilbrun earned a 5-1 decision in the 149 matchup to help the Bobcats keep pace with the Flames. Liberty would take control of the dual, taking the next five weights, though FSU ended on a strong note with freshman Gabriel Elfky getting a tech fall by a score of 18-3. The Flames would end up taking the opening round by a score of 28-13.
The second dual of day one would come against St. Andrews University, where in a dominant effort, eight of the weight classes went FSU's way en route to a 47-11 victory. Freshmen Alex Bellarin, Mason Buckler, Liam DeBaugh, Duncan Kammar, Willeam Applegarth, as well as Heilbrun, sophomore Dylan Montgomery and junior William Longhurst, all picked up wins, with six of them coming by pinfall.
Day two saw FSU matched against a familiar opponent in Marymount, whom they defeated earlier in the season by a score of 41-13. The margin of victory would be the similar the second time around, with freshman Logan Intrieri picking up his first win of the competition by a major decision. Heilbrun continued his good showing with his third win of the duals, as the Bobcats would win by a score of 34-6.
In the final match of the duals, FSU faced of against the Apprentice School to decide who would finish in ninth place. Bellarin started things off in a high scoring opener, winning by major decision 20-8. Diallo picked up his second win with a 13-9 decision, as Heilbrun finished a perfect weekend, going 4-0 with a pin in his last match. With two weight classes to go, the dual would tighten up at 22-15. Applegarth came through for the Bobcats, fighting back and taking the lead in the third period of his match to pick up the decision and stretch the FSU lead to 10, leading to the final 25-21 victory.
The Bobcats won three of their four duals and picked up 25 individual wins, now sporting a record of 9-11. They will return to action when they head to the Shippensburg Duals on Saturday, January 20 to face a trio of PSAC foes. For more information visit frostburgsports.com
