The Cumberland Times News reports a recorded message at Historical Oldtown Bridge Preservation, LLC, reported Friday that the private toll bridge spanning the Potomac River between Maryland and West Virginia is closed because of rising water.

Once the water recedes and the bridge is open, an attendant will answer at 301-478-550, according to the message.

Following several weeks of precipitation, a very heavy rainstorm moved through the upper reaches of the North Branch of the Potomac River on Thursday evening.

A U.S. Geological Survey river gauge at Cumberland indicated that at roughly 11 a.m. Friday, 3,780 cubic feet of water were flowing per second.

That flow is substantially above the historical amount for this date.
