Fatal accident on U.S. Route 40

On 12/5/22, at approximately 0637, troopers from the Hagerstown Barrack responded to the area of US Route 40 and Rockdale Road for a single vehicle Collison.  Upon arrival troopers located a rollback into a utility pole with the driver unconscious.               The investigation revealed that a 2013 Ford F650 rollback was traveling eastbound on US Route 40 in the area of Rockdale Road and went off the roadway for an unknown reason striking a utility pole.  The driver who was identified as Zachary Reid was transported to Meritus Medical Center and was pronounced deceased at 7:16 am.              …

Officers, suspect injured during morning altercation on Bedford Street

On Monday morning at  approximately  0720 officers were dispatched to the 900 block of Bedford Street for a disturbance.  Officers arrived and were confronted by the suspect. Officers attempted to take the individual into custody. The suspect resisted and began to assault officers. Additional officers were called to the scene, and the suspect was taken into custody. As of result of the encounter, several officers and the suspect were transported to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Additional information will be released about this incident at a later time. The investigation is still ongoing.  

Assault involving a knife on Park Street leads to Arrest

On December 5th, 2022 at approximately 4:04 a.m, the Cumberland Police Department responded to the 300 block of Park Street for an assault involving a knife. Upon arrival officers contacted the victim who advised that Kathleen Somers started a physical altercation with them. Somers produced a knife during the altercation, and cut them with the knife. The officers observed injuries that corroborated the victim’s statement and placed Somers under arrest for the assault. Pedestrian struck by motor vehicle

On December 4th, 2022 at approximately 3:00 p.m, the Cumberland Police Department responded to the intersection of N. Centre Street and Frederick Street for a pedestrian that was struck by a motor vehicle. The pedestrian was transported to UPMC Western Maryland for minor injuries. The investigation is on-going.

City taking Measures to prepare downtown business owners for the 18-month project

With construction set to begin on April 1st a number of measures are being taken to help prepare downtown business owners for the 18-month project including a town hall meeting in February. The project cleared a final hurdle early in November with the city council voting to accept $14.6 million bid from Triton construction to complete the renovation in downtown mall. The project includes replacing underground utility lines, reinstalling Baltimore Street through the pedestrian Mall and creating a new streetscape with parklet trees and shrubs. Fatal Vehicle Collision Rohrersville Road at Park Hall Road

On 12/4/2022, at approximately 2:36 am, troopers from the Hagerstown Barrack with the assistance of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded to a single vehicle collision in the area of Rohrersville Road (MD Rt 67) and Park Hall Road.  Upon arrival they located a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox resting against a tree.  The investigation revealed that the vehicle was traveling southbound on Rohrersville Road at which time it crossed over the northbound lanes for an unknown reason and went off the northbound shoulder and head-on into a tree. Cumberland Man arrested for destruction of property on Park Street

On 12/04/2022 at approximately 4:30AM the Cumberland City Police Department were dispatched to a business in the 700 block of Park Street for a destruction of property complaint. Officers spoke to employees of the business and learned that a male subject had turned over a display stand breaking it and threatened to assault the employees. Officers contacted the suspect William Victor Wight and attempted to place him under arrest. Wight resisted arrest and kicked at an officer while resisting.
