Attorney general voting poll shows Anthony Brown in the lead

A new poll shows a lopsided race is shaping up between the two Democrats running for attorney general, to replace retiring Brian Frosh. WBAL reports if  the primary were held on Tuesday, Congressman Anthony Brown of Prince George's County would defeat former state first lady and Judge Katie Curran O'Malley. A poll for Baltimore Sun Media and the University of Baltimore has Brown in front, 42% to 29%.  The poll shows 27% of Democrats remain undecided, possibly giving O'Malley an opening to win a good portion of them over. State COVID-19 metrics show slight decline

Maryland's latest COVID-19 surge may be losing some steam as new cases, positivity rates and hospitalizations are all down as of Tuesday. Hospitalizations are under 500 people, the positivity rate is down more than 3-tenths of a point to 8.18%, and the number of new cases remains under 2,000 with 1,826 currently. The COVID-19-related death toll now sits at 14,384 people in the state. To date, 11,909,644 COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in Maryland with 4,653,013 fully vaccinated.

Allegany College receives Nearly $750,000 Grant, Expands Nursing

Allegany College of Maryland is pleased to announce the receipt of a $749,215 Nurse Support Program II (NSP II) grant from the [Maryland] Health Services Cost Review Commission through the Maryland Higher Education Commission. ACM received the second highest NSP II grant award in the State.   GRANT STRENGTHENS CAPACITY  The goal of NSP II grants is to expand the capacity to educate nurses by increasing faculty and strengthening nursing education programs at Maryland institutions. Traffic Stop Leads to Drug Arrest on Greene Street

On Monday, June 6, 2022 at approximately 7:39 AM, an officer of the Cumberland Police Department conducted a traffic stop on George Street for a traffic violation.   The officer identified the operator as James Whetstone.  The officer requested a K-9 officer to respond to the scene.  A K-9 scan resulted in a positive alert to the odor of drugs.   A search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of a quantity of suspected controlled dangerous substances.  Whetstone was arrested and transported to police headquarters.  He was issued a criminal citation for CDS Possession-Not Marijuana and released pending trial at the…

Police Make Disturbance Arrest on Virginia Avenue

On Tuesday, June 7, 2022 at approximately 2:16 AM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a business on Virginia Avenue for a disturbance.  Police contacted Matthew Zink who was responsible for causing the disturbance.  Zink was told by officers to leave the property and not to return.  At approximately 3:56 AM, officers were called to the business for Zink causing another disturbance.   Police contacted staff who reported that Zink returned, disturbed the workers, and stole a drink from the store.  Zink was arrested and transported to the police station.  He was taken to Central Booking to await his…
