With New Year’s Eve coming up on Saturday, Maryland State Police are urging those who plan to celebrate with alcohol to be safe and smart and avoid impaired, distracted and aggressive driving. With an increase in impaired drivers expected throughout the state this weekend, state police will be conducting saturation patrols at each of the 23 barracks focusing on impaired, aggressive and distracted driving. Western Maryland property assessments among highest in state
Maryland property values jumped 20.6% over the last three years amid the pandemic’s strong market, the largest increase in recent years according to state tax officials. WBAL reports Maryland’s 2 million property accounts are split into three groups and appraised once every three years to help determine property taxes owed. The 2023 reassessment was the first for the nearly 800,000 commercial and residential properties for this group since the pandemic began, according to the State Department of Assessments and Taxation. The swearing-in ceremony for the newly elected mayor and City Council members will be held Jan. 3 at City Hall. The event will take place at noon in the rotunda of City Hall with Dawne D. Suspect in deaths of Idaho students arrested in Pennsylvania
A suspect in the killings of four slain Idaho students has been arrested in eastern Pennsylvania, an official said Friday. Arrest paperwork filed by Pennsylvania State Police in Monroe County Court says 28-year-old Bryan Kohberger was being held for extradition in a criminal homicide investigation based on an active arrest warrant for first degree murder issued by the Moscow Police Department and Latah County Prosecutor’s Office. Cumberland fire victim identified
According to the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office, the victim of the Dec. 20 fatal fire at 525 Columbia Ave. has been identifed as 35-year-old Brandy Alisea Walker. Positive identification of the victim was made by the Maryland State Medical Examiner's Office. Walker was found dead on the second-floor of the property. The 2022 WCBC Sports Athlete of the Year is Mikey Allen. Unanimously voted on by the WCBC Sports Team, no one had a bigger 2022 locally than Allen- where he hit 2 buzzer beaters to give Bishop Walsh their first 2-win weekend in the ACIT in school history, and last month, helped lead Fort Hill to a state football title. Home Invasion Arrest on Davidson Street
On 12/29/2022 at approximately 8:00AM the Cumberland City Police Department were dispatched to a residence in the 200 block of Davidson Street for a home invasion. Upon arrival officers spoke to the victim and learned that Nickoli Dundar Cakus had entered the residence without permission and assaulted a resident, taking an item from them. Cakus then took more property from the residence before fleeing. A neighbor and the victim confronted Cakus outside and were able to recover most of the stolen property.
