President Biden tests positive for COVID-19

President Joe Biden tested positive for COVID-19 Thursday morning, his office said. Biden, who is fully vaccinated and received two boosters, has "very mild symptoms" and is taking Paxlovid, press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement. Jean-Pierre said an update will be provided every day as Biden "continues to carry out the full duties of the office while in isolation" at the White House.

City Hall offices now open

Cumberland's City Hall office for paying tax and water bills was closed earlier this week as a result of a staffing shortage. City Administrator Jeff Silka tells WCBC News that there were a number of employees out sick at the same time and that created the problem, but the office is now staffed and open once again

West Virginia’s Deer Poaching Case continues

The Cumberland Times News report more no contest pleas and house arrest time have been agreed to for defendants in West Virginia's largest deer poaching case. West Virginia Natural Resources police conducted an investigation leading to 223 charges involving at least 27 bucks taking illegally in Mineral, Grant and Hampshire counties from mid September to late December. On Tuesday Horner, Sr. appeared in court and was originally charged with multiple counts of spotlighting, illegal wildlife possession, conspiracy and hunting from a vehicle. Under his plea agreement the charges were reduced to no jail time. He was ordered to pay a $1,881 fine…

Police Make Trespassing Arrests

On Wednesday officers of the Cumberland Police Department conducted patrols in the area of The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, which has areas posted “No Trespassing.” The officer’s located Robert Wayne Shears to be in an area posted no trespassing. Shears was then issued a Criminal Citation and released pending his trial at District Court. Justice Calls for Special Session on Tax Cuts, but not Abortion

On Wednesday, Governor Jim Justice issued a proclamation calling for the West Virginia Legislature to convene Monday, July 25 for a special session. The call only includes Justice’s proposal to reduce West Virginia’s personal income tax. This comes after Justice faced backlash Tuesday from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle who said they believe he should have acted sooner to clarify West Virginia’s abortion-related laws. There is currently an injunction in place on the 1849 law which banned abortions in West Virginia. Hogan Won’t Support Cox in Governor Race

The Associated Press has made a call in the Maryland GOP race for governor in favor of Donald Trump-supported Dan Cox over Kelly Schulz- while  the Democratic race is still up for grabs with votes too close to call, for now. As of Thursday morning, Wes Moore has a lead over Tom Perez and both have the lead over Peter Franchot. Given the news of Cox being the projected winner, the current Maryland governor, Republican Larry Hogan who endorsed Schulz, says he will not support Cox in his run for governor. Good news on the law and order front in Cumberland. Police Chief Chuck Ternent provided the Mayor and City Council with a mid year report- and the data shows that overall the number of incidents are down and arrests are up compared to the same time last year…
