An exchange between District 1 Senate candidates Mike McKay and Jake Shade at Thursday evening’s candidate forum on WCBC got tense regarding recent mailers from the Shade camp. Commissioner Shade has sent mailers to district Republicans questioning the labor union AFSCME endorsing Delegate McKay. The City of Cumberland Engineering Department, on behalf of JMT, is notifying the public that beginning on Monday, July 18, 2022, through Friday, July 22, 2022, the underside of the Crosstown Bridge (I-68) will be inspected. Comptroller Peter Franchot is reminding Maryland taxpayers that they have just one day left to file and pay their state individual income taxes for tax year 2021. Earlier this year, Franchot extended the individual income tax filing and payment due date by three months to Friday, July 15, 2022. He also extended the deadline for first- and second-quarter individual estimated tax payments for tax year 2022 to July 15, 2022. A state grant totaling more than $95,000 will be used to significantly improve security in the downtown business district. Deputy State Fire Marshals charged two thirteen-year-old youths yesterday after a joint investigation with Cumberland Police and Fire Departments. Both were charged with arson after an early morning fire in the 100 block of Grand Avenue. On Tuesday morning, just after 5:00 a.m., Cumberland Fire Department responded and discovered a fire within a two-story, vacant duplex. It took just minutes to bring the fire under control, and no one was injured. Damage to the home was estimated to be $1,500, and investigators concluded the fire was an intentional act.
