Shade Mailers Point of Contention in Forum

An exchange between District 1 Senate candidates Mike McKay and Jake Shade at Thursday evening’s candidate forum on WCBC got tense regarding recent mailers from the Shade camp.  Commissioner Shade has sent mailers to district Republicans questioning the labor union AFSCME endorsing Delegate McKay.  McKay said he is proud to have that endorsement and that to then accuse him of being liberal is wrong. Commissioner Shade stood by his mailer.

Crosstown Bridge Inspection set for Next Week

The City of Cumberland Engineering Department, on behalf of JMT, is notifying the public that beginning on Monday, July 18, 2022, through Friday, July 22, 2022, the underside of the Crosstown Bridge (I-68) will be inspected. At various times, the following roads will be flagged to route vehicles around the inspection equipment: Johnson Street Bridge Street South Mechanic Street South Centre Street Queen City Drive Park Street These roads are not expected to be closed at any point during this annual inspection. One day left to pay Maryland individual income taxes

Comptroller Peter Franchot is reminding Maryland taxpayers that they have just one day left to file and pay their state individual income taxes for tax year 2021. Earlier this year, Franchot extended the individual income tax filing and payment due date by three months to Friday, July 15, 2022. He also extended the deadline for first- and second-quarter individual estimated tax payments for tax year 2022 to July 15, 2022. Grant to improve security downtown

A state grant totaling more than $95,000 will be used to significantly improve security in the downtown business district. The receipt of the state safety grant was announced during this week’s Cumberland Economic Development Corporation meeting with executive director Matt Miller indicating that the funds would be used to cover the costs of cameras, computer equipment, monitors, communication equipment and video recorders. Hogan fuels speculation regarding run for White House

Giving further fuel to speculation that he plans a run for the White House in 2024 , Maryland Governor Larry Hogan made a stop in New Hampshire Wednesday, and he talked politics during a series of interviews. Hogan made the unannounced visit on his way to the National Governor’s Association Annual Summer meeting in Portland Maine. Looking at the national scene, it was revealed during the latest January 6th committee hearing that Maryland’s lone Republican Representative Andy Harris was among nine GOP members of congress who attended a meeting in December of 2020 focused on overturning the 2020 presidential election….

City police make arrests involving theft cases

CRIMINAL SUMMONS & WARRANTS SERVED On Wednesday, July 13, 2022, the Cumberland Police Department served an arrest warrant, a bench warrant, and a criminal summons on Evan West. The arrest warrant was issued as a result of a private company filing charges against West for theft. The bench warrant was issued due to West failing to appear for a court case on May 20, 2022. Juveniles Charged After Vacant Cumberland House Fire

Deputy State Fire Marshals charged two thirteen-year-old youths yesterday after a joint investigation with Cumberland Police and Fire Departments. Both were charged with arson after an early morning fire in the 100 block of Grand Avenue.  On Tuesday morning, just after 5:00 a.m., Cumberland Fire Department responded and discovered a fire within a two-story, vacant duplex. It took just minutes to bring the fire under control, and no one was injured. Damage to the home was estimated to be $1,500, and investigators concluded the fire was an intentional act. Cumberland hot target for economic development

The Cumberland Mayor and City Council and the Cumberland Economic Development Corporation received updates Tuesday on a number of projects under development- and it was a glowing report. Updates on the Baltimore Street Access project; the Messick Road commercial development and the housing complex planned for the former Memorial Hospital location are all now moving forward- and city officials are now getting calls about potential new projects on a steady basis.
