City Woman Arrested on CDS Charges
On Thursday, June 16, 2022 at approximately 7:40 AM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a residence in the 200 block of Decatur Street for the report of people in the apartment that were not allowed to be there. Upon arrival, police contacted Kelly Sinclair who advised that she had permission to be there. While speaking with Sinclair, an officer observed a suspected controlled dangerous substance on the couch. Police Respond to Well-Being Check, Make CDS Arrest
On Thursday, at approximately 11:05 AM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a residence in the 100 block of Roberts Street to check on the well-being of a subject passed out in a vehicle. Upon arrival, police contacted the resident who reported that Robert Harris took her car last night without her permission and returned sometime this morning. She explained that when she noticed that her car was back, she observed Harris passed out in the driver’s seat. Police Make Arrest in Disturbance
On Thursday, June 16, 2022 at approximately 9:13 PM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department were called to a residence in the 400 block of Bond Street for a disturbance. Police contacted the resident who reported that he had invited a couple over to his residence. He explained that Michael Alburtis became too intoxicated and began to argue with him and the other female present. He advised that he needed Alburtis to leave and he refused. Vaccines for Younger Children Could be Available Next Week
The U.S. has taken another step toward making children younger than five years old eligible for COVID vaccinations. Advisors to the FDA this week unanimously voted to recommend authorization of Pfizer and Moderna’s vaccines for kids aged six months to under five years. It’s a critical move for the youngest Americans, numbering around 18 million total, who until now have not been able to be inoculated. Rutherford Calls State Leaders Cowards on Lack of Gas Tax Holiday
With gas prices now exceeding $5 in most of Maryland- and despite renewed pleas from the governor and the comptroller- it appears there is no desire on the part of General Assembly leaders to approve a new gas tax holiday. The lack of action has Lt Governor Boyd Rutherford branding state leaders as cowards. Census Data Shows 23% of Local Residents Experience Poverty
According to a recent report, much of Allegany County's population still lives below federal poverty guidelines. The 2019 Census American Community Survey data indicated that 23% of residents in Cumberland and Frostburg were experiencing poverty, compared to the state average of 9%. Countywide, the poverty rate was 15.6%. It is one reason that affordable, low cost housing is a priority for the area. However at the same time the city is trying to attract and retain young professionals looking for quality homes in attractive neighborhoods. Manchin Asks Corridor H to be Prioritized
During recent Senate Appropriations Committee hearings, U.S. Senator Joe Manchin asked Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg to prioritize completing Corridor H in a timely fashion. Corridor H, also known as U.S. Route 48, connects I-79 in Weston to I-81 in Strasburg, VA and will be an economic gateway to much of West Virginia which will in turn increase tourism across the Mountain State. Funds could also become available to construct a north-south highway along the U.S. Route 220 corridor in Mineral and Allegany counties that would connect with Corridor H at the northern end and Interstate 68 at the southern. Pedestrian Struck by Vehicle near Massachusetts Avenue
On Thursday afternoon at 12:28 p.m. units from the Cumberland Police and Fire department responded to E. Oldtown Road at Massachusetts Avenue for a pedestrian that was struck by a vehicle. Upon the units arrival, officers learned that the pedestrian was crossing E. Oldtown Road within the cross walk when she was struck by MD REG MTN0125, operated by Frances Patton of Cresaptown. The pedestrian was transported to UPMC Western Maryland with non-life threatening injuires. Patton was determined to be at fault for crash and was issued several traffic citations.
