Police spend holiday weekend serving Warrants

On Sunday, the Cumberland Police Department served an arrest warrant on Aaron Gardipee.  The warrant stemmed from Gardipee  making numerous false emergency calls for emergency services since May 27, 2022.  A Cumberland police officer applied for charges against Gardipee at the District Court of Allegany County and a warrant was issued.  Gardipee was arrested and transported to Central Booking.  He was later seen by a District Court Commissioner and remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center on a $5,000 bond.   ARRESTED:  Aaron Cain Gardipee          AGE:  51                  Arlee, MT CHARGES:  False Alarm/Ambulance Cause, Reckless Endangerment   BENCH WARRANTS SERVED   On…

Cumberland Woman Arrested after throwing brick at Police Cruiser

On Sunday, afternoon at approximately  4:35 PM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to the first block of Washington Street for a female destroying property at the Circuit Court building.  Police arrived on scene and observed Jennifer Shoap acting irate and yelling obscenities.  As the officer was exiting her vehicle, Shoap picked up a brick and threw it in the officer’s direction, striking the police cruiser.  The officer was able to physically overtake Shoap and then handcuff her with the assistance of another officer.  Further investigation revealed that Shoap had destroyed multiple items at the property.  Shoap was arrested and…

City Officials Exploring Adding Entertainment at Canal Place

City officials are exploring adding more entertainment in the future- with a focus on the festival grounds at Canal Place. It is a discussion that began picking up steam last summer following the highly successful free Del McCoury Band show at Canal Place. Fatal Motorcycle Crash in Hancock

Maryland State Police are investigating a fatal crash that involved three motorcycles late this morning in Washington County. Shortly before 11:25 a.m. this morning, troopers from the Maryland State Police Hagerstown Barrack responded to a three-vehicle crash involving three motorcycles in the area of westbound Interstate-70 in Hancock, Maryland. According to a preliminary investigation, a 1995 Honda motorcycle driven by Sandra Kay Wetzel, 53, of Hagerstown, Maryland, was traveling west on I-70 when she lost control of her motorcycle and struck the guardrail. Allegany Girls Win State Title

The Allegany Campers won the Class 1A  state championship in softball Saturday with a 3-2 victory over Patterson Mills ending that team's 44- game winning streak. The title is Allegany's third in school history and first since 2010.   

ASSAULT ARREST

On Saturday, May 28, 2022 at approximately 1:35 PM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a residence in the 200 block of Fairfax Street for an assault.  Police contacted the female resident who reported that she had been assaulted by David Twigg.  She explained that she was trying to leave the residence when Twigg grabbed her by the arms and threw her to the ground.  Officers observed that she had sustained injuries.  After further investigation, Twigg was arrested and transported to Central Booking.  Twigg was later seen by a District Court Commissioner and released on his personal recognizance….

Allegany County COVID-19 Case Rate still below State Average

The Allegany County COVID-19 case rate currently stands at 20.49 cases per 100,000 population, below the Maryland rate of 36.4 cases per 100,000. The Allegany County COVID-19 case rate has remained below the Maryland rate for the past two months.   The Allegany County Fairgrounds COVID-19 testing and vaccination sites are temporarily suspended due to an event at the fairgrounds. Testing at the fairgrounds will resume on June 1.
