Pimlico Demolition Underway

Governor Wes Moore attended the demolition of the clubhouse at Pimlico Racetrack in Baltimore Thursday.  New racecourse construction will begin early next year.  The new facility will support over 500 jobs, and go from hosting approximately 15 racing days per year to becoming the permanent home of Maryland Thoroughbred racing with more than 100 racing days annually.  Next year’s Preakness Stakes will stay in Maryland at Laurel Park.

Federal Court Rules in Favor of WVU Players

Four WVU football players won a victory in federal court this week to continue playing for the Mountaineers.  The United States District Court for the Northern District of West Virginia ruled in favor of the players on Wednesday, granting a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction to allow the players on the field.  The 67-page opinion from United States District Judge John Bailey comes after a complaint was filed by the athletes against the NCAA on Aug. 1. The complaint alleges the NCAA wrongfully denied the athletes' eligibility for the 2025 season, based on time previously spent at non-NCAA institutions.

Maryland Unemployment Increases Slightly

Maryland’s workforce increased by 11,700 jobs in July, according to the monthly estimate by the U.S. Department of Labor. The increase in jobs was due to reported gains of 900 private-sector jobs and 10,800 public-sector jobs. Maryland’s federal workforce saw a further decline of 500 jobs in July. The state’s unemployment rate increased to 3.4% – one tenth of a percent over June.

Pennsylvania Continues Without Budget Agreement

The Pennsylvania state house in Harrisburg is empty until lawmakers return from their summer recess in early September.  The legislators were supposed to have a state budget passed by June 30, but the Senate and House have yet to come to an agreement on a spending plan for the Commonwealth. In 2023, it took until December for the state to pass a budget. Meanwhile, those agencies that rely on state funding are waiting and tightening their financial belts.

Crash On Industrial Boulevard

Emergency services is reporting a motor vehicle crash in the area of 24 West Industrial Boulevard. One lane is closed and Fire/EMS/CPD are on scene. Please use caution, anticipate delays, and find an alternate route if possible.

Comprehensive Plan Neighborhood Meeting This Evening

A meeting this evening on Cumberland's Comprehensive Plan will focus on the city's neighborhoods and neighborhood groups. Beginning at 6pm at City Hall, the meeting will hear from residents and organized groups what it is they want for their areas of town. It's all part of the city's work to develop its next Comprehensive Plan, a guide that is revised every ten years.

Civil Citations Issued

On Wednesday, August 20, 2025, Officers of the Cumberland Police Department were on patrol in the area of the Riverside Park on Greene Street when they observed several individuals consuming alcoholic beverages in public. Nicky Linn and Amber Wariner were both issued civil citations for the open containers and released on scene. The Officers returned to the scene after some time and observed Warner consuming an open container again. She was issued a second citation and released. 

Bohrer Arrested On Multiple Warrants

On Wednesday, August 20, 2025, Officers of the Cumberland Police Department served five bench warrants on Javas Bohrer for failing to appear on multiple occasions. Bohrer was transported to the Allegany County Detention Center for his initial appearance, where he was held without bond. 

Proposed Power Line Has Opposition, Options

An increase in the need for electricity across the country has suppliers scrambling to find ways to keep that need met. The Mid-Atlantic Resilience Link would bring power from Pennsylvania through West Virginia and Maryland and into Virginia for data centers. AHEC Earns Workplace Designation

AHEC West was recently given the designation of being a Recovery Friendly Workplace at the Platinum Level by the Western Maryland Consortium. The workplace model encourages the hiring of people in recovery, the support of employees, and collaboration among employees to drive positive change and eliminate barriers. The designation is a result of the completion of activities including naloxone training, stigma-reduction measures, and incorporating other policies.
