Trespassing Arrest Western Maryland Scenic Railroad

On December 3rd, 2025 at approximately 12:31 p.m., a Cumberland police officer was conducting a foot patrol in the area of the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. The officer observed an individual in a clearly posted "No Trespass" area. The officer identified the subject as Timothy Dale Ryan. BENCH WARRANTS SERVED

On Tuesday, December 2, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department served three bench warrants on Eric Rosenberger.  The warrants were issued as the result of Rosenberger violating probation on original theft charges and Disturb Peace: Hinder Passage.  Rosenberger was arrested and transported to Central Booking.  He was later seen by a District Court Commissioner and remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center without bond. Presents For Paws Helps Animal Shelter

The Allegany County Animal Shelter is holding their annual Presents for Paws holiday donation event this Saturday, December 6th, between 1 and 3pm. The public is invited to see improvements made at the Furnace Street shelter, purchase items from the bake sale, and maybe even take home a friend. Blankets, beds and winter gear are specifically being requested for both cats and dogs, including wet and dry pet food, as well as grooming supplies or cleaning items and toys.

Ten Charged In Jessup Smuggling Scheme

Ten people have been indicted for contraband smuggling schemes at Jessup Correctional Institution. Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown said a comprehensive investigation found three female correctional officers were involved in different smuggling schemes along with seven inmates who were charged with contraband conspiracy and other charges. The schemes involved smuggling phones, drugs, and other contraband in exchange for money and luxury items.

City Historic Planner Resigning

Cumberland's Historic Planner and Preservation Coordinator has announced her resignation from the position. City Administrator Jeff Silka relayed the information during the Mayor and Council work session on Tuesday.  Ruth Davis-Rogers has been in the position with the city for four years. She has taken a similar position in Calvert County but will continue with the City of Cumberland through the end of the year.

THEFT ARREST AND CRIMINAL SUMMONS SERVED

On Tuesday, December 2, 2025, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a business in the 700 block of Park Street for a shoplifting complaint.  Police contacted the staff who reported that the suspect stole several items from the store and fled the area.  After further investigation, a suspect was developed and identified as Timothy Mejais.   Police later located Mejais on Springdale Street.  He was arrested and transported to police headquarters. City Discusses Modernizing Bicycle City Code

The Cumberland Mayor and City Council discussed modernizing their 1966 City Code for bicycle traffic during Tuesday’s Open Work Session.  Revisions will be made over the next several weeks to also prohibit skateboards, scooters, electric bikes, electric scooters, and electric skateboards from Downtown’s sidewalks.  Children’s riding devices like scooters, wagons, automobiles, tricycles and the like will still be allowed.  City Administrator Jeff Silka says the revisions are for the safety of the pedestrians… “This isn’t against ebikes, this isn’t against bicycles.  We’re a very bike friendly town.  We have bike lanes, you know, we’re making them use the rules of…

Parklet Brings Back Downtown Christmas Memories

Taking the family to see the Christmas windows in downtown Cumberland was an annual event. Foreman Coat, Blanket Drive A Success

Foreman Financial collected blankets and coats for the families still without heat in the Westernport and Lonaconing areas affected by the May flood.  Kristina Dunn said not only did they receive coats and 50 blankets, but Service Unlimited, another local business, bought 25 heaters to be given to families…    “I am just extremely thankful for everybody who helped out, everybody who brought things in, everybody that’s been asking about it.  WCBC for putting it on the radio and Junior from Service Unlimited for what he did.”

MD Fair Map Advocates Concerned Over Redistricting

Maryland is the latest blue state to jump into the redistricting battle, which is now engulfing multiple states. But it’s unclear whether it will be successful, and some advocates for fair maps hope the will of constituents is centered in the process.  Joanne Antoine, with Common Cause Maryland, says it’s unfortunate that redistricting battles have taken over and hopes the redistricting commission hears the people…     “Our goal is to ensure that, when maps are drawn, we are instead centering the people, the constituents in those districts, and not politicians who want to maintain their own political power.”
