85th COVID-19 Death Reported in Mineral County

The county health department reported Thursday a  92-year-old man is Mineral County's 85th resident to die from COVID-19. Health officials say the man had been hospitalized prior to his death. After a slight spike in cases that persisted for a few weeks, numbers have declined recently in the county. The county had 79 active cases Thursday, according to state data, and has seen 2,541 throughout the pandemic. Another 296 cases were listed as probable. Nearly 7,600 county residents have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 — 28% of the county's population.

25 Drug Indictments returned by Mineral County Grand Jury

According to the Mineral County Office of the Prosecuting Attorney twenty-five people were indicted on felony drug charges among 41 indictments returned by the May term of the grand jury. In addition to the indictments for alleged drug distribution offenses, other indictments were returned for alleged crimes of malicious wounding, sexual abuse, embezzlement, failure to comply with sex offender registry, burglary, firearms violations and grand larceny.

Maryland Surpasses 5 Million COVID-19 Vaccinations

Governor Larry Hogan today announced that the State of Maryland has officially surpassed the milestone of 5 million COVID-19 vaccines administered, as the state’s key health metrics continue to decline across the board. 62.9% of Adults With At Least One Dose. In total, Maryland has reported 5,047,436 vaccinations. According to official CDC data, 62.9% of Marylanders 18 and older, and 85.2% of Marylanders 65 and older, have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Two Tractor Trailer Roll Overs Causing Traffic Delays

Allegany County Emergency Services reported a tractor trailer rollover on Interstate 68 East at the 70 mile marker just after midnight. The scene has now been cleared. A second tractor trailer rollover reported on Route 50 near Rutty Road between the Millstone Store and Oldtown. Route 51 is closed while units work to clear the scene.

Power Outage Affecting Allegany/Garrett Counties

8:30AM Potomac Edison is reporting service outages affecting parts of Allegany and Garrett Counties. About 200 customers in Allegany County are without service. Most of the outages are occurring in Garrett County, including Grantsville, Bittinger and Accident. At least 2500 are without service.

Police Make Assault Arrest

On May 5th, 2021 officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a North Waverly Terrace address for a reported assault. Upon officers arrival they spoke with a victim who advised that Glenn Allen Lowery had placed them into a choke hold. Due to the choke hold, Lowery began strangling the victim to the point of nearly losing consciousness. Lowery then stole the victims cell phone and fled the residence. Officers were later able to locate Lowery and placed him under arrest. Lowery was taken before a District Court Commissioner where he was held without bond.   Arrest: Glenn Allen…

Vehicular Crash Leads to DUI Arrest

On May 6th, 2021 officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to the 100 Block of Greene Street for a reported multi motor vehicle crash. Upon officers arrival they began to investigate the crash when one of the operators, Anthony Dwayne Dyson Jr, became argumentative with the officer. The officer then attempted to ascertain if there were injuries to those involved. While conducting their investigation Dyson continued to be aggressive with the investigating officer and struck the officer in the face numerous times. The officer advised Dyson he was under arrest, and he continued to resist and assault the officer….

WCBC/FSU Student Scholarships Announced

Three Allegany County Public School students were recently selected as 2021 recipients of the WCBC/Frostburg State University annual High School Student Salute Program scholarships. Jada Jones, Fort Hill High School, will receive a $5,000 one-year scholarship to Frostburg State University for the 2021-2022 academic year. Richard Day, Allegany High School, and Emily Lease, Mountain Ridge High School, are the second and third place recipients of $500 scholarships to FSU for the upcoming year. Grantsville Section of Rt. 219 Completed

The highway project at Grantsville that includes realignment of a portion of U.S. Route 219 and a new fourlane section of road is finished and will open Thursday, according to the Maryland Department of Transportation. The 1.4-mile section of 219 provides additional space for through-truck traffic along U.S. 219 Business, allowing improved separation from local traffic. The four-lane highway has two 12-foot lanes, an 8-foot inside shoulder and a 10-foot outside shoulder in each direction. It also includes two roundabouts, turn lanes connecting to U.S. 219 Business and a new median.
