On 01/17/2025 officers from the Cumberland Police Department and deputies from the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office were working a warrant apprehension grant.  They attempted to arrest a subject with a felony arrest warrant in the 700 block of Fayette Street. The subject was able to barricade herself inside of her residence.  Members of the Allegany County Special Operations Response Team as well as Crisis Negotiation Team responded to the scene.  National Weather Service has issued a WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 7 AM TO 7 PM SUNDAY.. Heavy snow possible with total snow accumulations up to around 4 to 6 inches possible for portions of western Maryland, northwest Virginia, and panhandle West Virginia from late Saturday night through Sunday afternoon. Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact travel. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. Cumberland Police Department has not released a statement regarding police activity in the 700 block of Fayette Street Friday evening just before 6 p.m. Reports of increased law enforcement and a special response unit as well as questions of a firearm being used in a possible hostage situation and drugs  remain unanswered. Cumberland Police Department has not responded to request for information regarding the westside incident. 

On Friday, January 17, 2025 at approximately 10:56 AM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a residence in the 400 block of Baltimore Avenue to assist Code Enforcement.  Police contacted Shane Sneathen inside the property.  It was determined that nobody was allowed inside the residence.  Sneathen was placed under arrest and searched.  He was found to be in possession of suspected fentanyl and related drug paraphernalia.  Sneathen was issued criminal citations and later released pending trial. Frostburg State Women's Track and Field took part in their first competition of 2025 at the Youngstown State Invitational on Friday. Junior Valerie Boards had one of the best days of the sprints group, qualifying for the 60m finals with a 7.93 in eighth place, then coming fourth in the 200m at 25.39, which was the top time among Division II schools. On Thursday, January 16th, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department responded to a Race St residence for the report of an assault. Once on scene, officers contacted the victim and a witness of the alleged assault. Officers were advised that an argument began inside the home in reference to household property left outside the home. It was then alleged that the suspect grabbed the victim by the head and dragged them to the floor, causing injuries to the leg, arm, and hand.
