Altercation on Maryland Avenue Leads to Assault Charges
On March 7, 2021, at 10:46 pm, the Cumberland City Police responded to the 800 block of Maryland Avenue for an assault complaint. Upon arrival officers contacted the victim and Rodrigo Tatum, age 19 of Cumberland, Maryland. Officers learned that an argument occurred between Tatum and the victim. The argument then escalated and Tatum allegedly assaulted the victim. Subsequently, Tatum was arrested and charged with second degree assault. Tatum was later taken to District Court for his Initial Appearance, and released on his personal recognizance pending trial.
Goucher Poll Shows Marylanders Unhappy with Vaccine Distribution
According to WBAL Radio, a recent Goucher College poll finds that a majority of Marylanders are willing to take one of the COVID-19 vaccines but are unhappy with their distribution in the state. The poll results show that the vaccine distribution systems was rated "fair" or "poor" by 66% of those polled. The poll was conducted by cell phone and land line of 725 Marylanders from February 23rd through February 28th.
Phase-In of Returning ACPS Students Continues this Week
Allegany County Public Schools is continuing the transition back to school buildings for concurrent in-person/hybrid learning with students in grades 2-5, 6,9 and 12 returning today. The rollout will essentially be complete next week when students in grades 7,8,10 and 11 return to the classroom. After a hiatus last year because of the coronavirus pandemic, DelFest organizers announced last week that the popular music festival would make its return in 2021 but not during it’s traditional Memorial Day Weekend spot. Instead, the festival has been scheduled for Sept. 23-26. The September festival would be the 13th DelFest held at the Allegany County Fairgrounds. The announcement said that the lineup of entertainers is being determined, but will likely include acts scheduled to perform in 2020. Allegany County’s new State’s Attorney tells WCBC News that unfortunately the Coronavirus pandemic has done nothing to slow the opioid crisis in the county and says, in fact, the problem is growing. Justice Continues to Express Caution as WV Allows 100% Capacity at Businesses
Governor Jim Justice has restored full seating capacity to restaurants and bars in West Virginia as active COVID-19 case numbers continue to drop. Justice announced a number of relaxations of previous mandates during his Friday media briefing at the state capitol. As long as social distancing can be maintained, restaurants and bars can return to 100% seating capacity and small businesses and retail stores can open their businesses to patrons and 100% capacity. UPDATED: Liberty Street Oven Fire Injures Two
10:12 AM UPDATE: WCBC's Chris Myers reports the second patient is being transported from Cumberland Arms by ambulance to UPMC Western Maryland. The Joint Communications Center of Allegany County dispatched fire and EMS to Liberty Street Sunday morning for an oven fire in an apartment. One percson was taken to UPMC Western Maryland by Cumberland Fire Department ambulance. Another person was being evaluated for medical issues. Otjer Allegany County fire and EMS units were called to stand by status in Cumberland.
Man Jailed in Alleged Baker Street Strangling
On Saturday at approximately 8:30 PM, Cumberland City Police were dispatched to the 600 block of Baker Street for an assault in progress. Officers arrived on scene and contacted the victim who advised they were strangled by Jerry Lee Brown. Officers observed injuries to the victim consistent with victim’s statement. Brown had fled prior to police arrival but was located a short distance away and placed under arrest without issue. City Man Accused in Decatur Street Incident
On Saturday at approximately 7:00 PM the Cumberland City Police Department was dispatched to a residence in the 200 block of Decatur Street for a disturbance. Upon arrival officers contacted the victim who advised Ernest Thomas Magruder III had come to the residence and was pounding on the front door. While Mr. Magruder was pounding on the door he destroyed the window frame on the door. Officers observed the damage to the window frame consistent with the victim’s statements.
