Ellerslie Road Accident Shuts Down Roadway Overnight

The Joint Communications Center of Allegany County dispatched police, fire and EMS units to Route 35, otherwise known as Ellerslie Road just after 1:00 AM Sunday for a vehicle accident. The mishap occurred just north of Corriganville, and the vehicle was reported on its top. The road was shutdown for over an hour and a half for emergency response.

Maryland Conservation Corps Lists New Graduates

The ceremony commemorated the members’ completion of 10 months of job training, conservation work, and stewardship with the Maryland Park Service. Members from across the country, all between the ages of 17 and 25, completed 1,700 hours of service. This year’s crews planted thousands of trees, bay grasses and native plants; treated trees against harmful insects and diseases; and taught environmental education programs to more than 7,915 students, youth, and park visitors. “This year’s theme…

Interstate Stop Leads to Major Garrett Drug Bust

A traffic stop by an alert trooper in Garrett County Thursday night led to the recovery of guns, drugs and the arrests of two suspects, one of whom was wanted in Georgia. The suspects are identified as Earnest Moreland III, 34, of Decatur, GA, and Donnell Lipscomb, 39, of Essex, Md. Both were charged with more than one dozen counts each related to the illegal possession of guns and drugs. Both were ordered held without bond, following their initial appearance before a court commissioner. Shop Tax Free Week in Maryland begins Sunday

Marylanders have a full week to enjoy tax-free shopping during “Shop Maryland Tax-Free Week.” During this week, clothing and footwear priced at $100 or less is exempt from Maryland’s 6% sales tax, regardless of how many items are purchased. The first $40 of any backpack or bookbag purchase is also tax-free. A list of eligible items — as well as a fact sheet for shoppers and merchants — are available online. City Woman Charged with Burglary, Theft

On Friday officers of the Cumberland Police Department served an Arrest Warrant on Caitlin Crabtree. The Arrest Warrant was issued by the District Court after an officer completed an application for charges in regards to a burglary investigation. Gaming Revenue on the rise at Rocky Gap

Gaming revenue at Maryland’s six casinos set a record high in July for the third time in five months. The state’s half-dozen casinos generated a total of $180.1 million in gaming revenue last month, up 28.7% from July 2020. Casinos were operating at 50% capacity last July, but July 2020 was the first full month that casinos were reopened after being closed in March 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. 44 New COVID-19 Cases in Allegany County

Like other states, Maryland is seeing a marked increase in the number of new COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations.  Genetic sequencing of new cases of COVID-19 in Maryland show that nearly 100% involve the more highly contagious Delta variant, which also accounts for 93% of new cases nationwide.  Almost all new COVID-19 infections, hospitalizations, and deaths are occurring in unvaccinated individuals.  So-called “breakthrough” infections (cases of COVID infection in a vaccinated person) are extremely rare, but not unexpected – no vaccine is 100% effective.  COVID statistics show that all three approved COVID-19 vaccinations are highly effective at preventing illness, hospitalization and…

Van Hollen Urges Senate to Immediately Replenish Funds to Support Maryland Restaurants

U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) sent a letter to Senate leadership, urging action to revitalize the Restaurant Revitalization Fund in order to support local restaurants still struggling due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. The Senator is a cosponsor of Restaurant Revitalization Fund Replenishment Act of 2021, legislation to provide the RRF with an additional $60 billion in funding to meet the outstanding demand for the program.
