Health Department Issues COVID Update

The Allegany County Health Department reports that Allegany County’s cumulative COVID-19 case count is now at 5,276, with 153 deaths.  The current case rate in Allegany County is 44.43 cases per 100,000 population, while Maryland’s state average is currently 38.73 cases per 100,000 population.  Allegany’s positivity rate is now at 6.28%, while the statewide average is 7.42%.    Health Officials continue to urge the community to stay at home as much as possible and avoid gatherings of any size with others outside of your household.  Connect through social media, by phone, or video chat platforms like Zoom or Google Meet. …

First Responders Next in Maryland Vaccine Rollout

Early COVID-19 vaccinations at Maryland hospitals, nursing homes, and local health departments will continue this week as the state allocates an additional 82,800 doses of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. Phase 1A of the state’s vaccination plan is focused on front line healthcare workers, long-term care residents and staff, and first responders. Through this week’s allocations, local health departments will be able to begin vaccination clinics for first responders, and hospitals will have enough doses to vaccinate all of their critical front line staff. Edwards Lauded For Enforcement

Congratulations to Frostburg Police PFC Gregory Edwards on receiving the DUI Meritorious Recognition Award from the Maryland Highway Safety Office for having gone above and beyond to remove impaired drivers from Maryland roadways.   PFC Edwards received this award for making the most DUI arrests in the police department for the calendar year 2019. City Reminds Residents of No-Cost Christmas Tree Removal Service

The City of Cumberland Christmas is reminding residents about tree removal services being offered by Burgmeier's Hauling – Place your Christmas tree out on the curb on any of your trash days, and Burgmeier’s will remove it. If you prefer to recycle your live Christmas tree, you can take it to the County Recycling Center at 975 Kelly Road through Jan. 26. Remove all ornaments, lights and tinsel, and no flocked trees. After Jan 26, live Christmas trees may be dropped off at the Allegany County Mulch and Yard Trim Recycling Site on PPG Road.

Washington Releases Haskins

The Washington Football Team has released second year quarterback Dwayne Haskins. Haskins, the teams first round draft pick in 2019, was benched Sunday after throwing two interceptions in a 20-13 loss to the Carolina Panthers. The 15th overall selection in the draft can be claimed by any team on waivers, but that seems unlikely.  

Candle Incident Burns Three in Frostburg

The Office of the State Fire Marshal investigated the events surrounding an incident this weekend after three Frostburg residents were injured, including one who was transferred to a Pittsburgh hospital for their injuries.  On Saturday, December 26, 2020, at 10:15 p.m., Frostburg Fire Department and Allegany County Department of Emergency Services were dispatched to the 16000 block of Duck Hill Drive in Frostburg for multiple burn patients. Cumberland Man Arrested for Damaging Vehicle

On 12/27/2020 at approximately 11:30 AM the Cumberland City Police Department responded to the 900 block of Park Street for a disturbance. Upon arrival officers spoke to the complainant who advised that they were driving and a male punched the side of their vehicle. There was visible damage to the vehicle as a result of the suspect’s actions. Officers located the male and identified him as Gregory Allen Mellott II. Mr. Mellott was placed under arrest without incident and transported to the police station. Mr. Mellott was issued a criminal citation and was released pending trial in District Court.  …
