Criminal Summons Served on Assault
On November 12th, 2020 a criminal summons was served on Christopher Royce Ravenscroft, 30, of Cumberland MD. The summons was in reference to an incident that occurred on November 11th, 2020 where the victim alleged that Ravenscroft assaulted them. Working House Fire in Bedford Area
At approximately 10:42pm Thursday night, a fire was reported in the Bedford Road area – a working house fire on Sentinel Lane of Cumberland. Emergency crews are on the scene battling the blaze.
ACPS Lunch Announcement
IMPORTANT UPDATE: Beginning Friday, November 13, and until further notice, George's Creek and Northeast Elementary Schools will not be serving breakfast or lunch. Parents/students can go to any other ACPS school location to pick up a meal during the scheduled food distribution times.
Hogan Announces Additional Funding for Struggling Businesses
Maryland Governor Larry Hogan Thursday announced tens of millions of dollars in state funding to further bolster the emergency response to the coronavirus. The grants are designed to provide financial relief to locally owned and operated businesses within the restaurant industry who have received significant hardship because of COVID-19. Maryland is reporting 159,900 confirmed cases of coronavirus cases as of Thursday, including an additional 1,477 new cases in the past 24 hours. The state's seven-day positivity rate increased to 5.65%, and half of Maryland's jurisdictions have positivity rates above 5%- those include Allegany, Garrett and Washington. Downtown Christmas Tree Lighting to be Virtual This Year
Another popular tradition has fallen victim to the Coronavirus pandemic, with the official announcement Thursday that the downtown Cumberland Christmas tree lighting will be a virtual event this year. It is the latest in a series of downtown holiday events being handled differently this season. Last month, no Halloween Parade could be held, and the usual trick-or-treat activities were essentially reduced to a drive by night at Constitution Park. Councilman Frazier on Board with Gateway Plaza after Initially Dissenting
Two years after casting the lone dissenting vote against a contract with the developer of the proposed Cumberland Gateway plaza, City Councilman Eugene Frazier is now expressing support for the project. Five years of talks have resulted in an announcement of a groundbreaking for the commercial plaza in the Rolling Mill area, and during discussions this week, Frazier said he was excited to see the effort finaly coming to fruition. Honorees in Allegany, Garrett Counties Receive Schaefer Awards
Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot has virtually presented the remaining 2019 William Donald Schaefer Helping People Awards to honorees in Allegany and Garrett counties. In Allegany County, Dorian Birkholz received the Helping People Award for her work with the Western Maryland Mission of Mercy Dental Clinic, providing free dental treatment to adults who could not otherwise afford it. COVID Outbreak at Keyser Nursing Home
The Mineral County Department Health Department nineteen COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in an outbreak at Piney Valley Nursing Home, along with an additional case involving an employee at McDonald's in Keyser. The Cumberland Times News reports that of the Piney Valley cases, 10 are among employees and nine are residents. By state guidelines, a single case in such a facility constitutes an outbreak because of the ease of spread, according to a news release. Mineral County Schools will continue to function as Red for the week of Nov. 16 through Nov. 21. Schools will remain closed with students on remote learning and all extracurricular activities will remain suspended. Regardless of the color the system may be on the DHHR Map/WVDE Daily or Saturday Map, our 7-day infection rate continues to be nearly 4 times the standard for Red and our percent positive is more than double the state average.
