Two Frostburg residents arrested on weapons charges

On Tuesday, September 8th, 2020, a Deputy with the Allegany County Sheriff's Office observed a vehicle operating recklessly in the area of Winchester Road, Lavale, MD. The Deputy conducted a traffic on the vehicle as it entered the parking lot of a nearby shopping center. After contacting the operator and occupants the Deputy noticed that the subjects were acting suspiciously prompting him to request a Sheriff's "K9" team response. Seven new COVID-19 cases in Allegany County, two deaths

The Allegany County Health Department reports that one community member in their 70s and a second person who was a nursing home resident have died from COVID-19.  Since Friday, there have been seven new cases of COVID-19 identified in Allegany County including a male and female in their teens, four females in their 20s, and a male in his 50s.  None of the new cases have required hospitalization.  This brings the cumulative number of cases in Allegany County to 411. 

Allegany BOE presents in-person learning timetable

Under the plan outlined during Tuesday’s meeting of the Allegany County Board of Education- small groups of students could be back in the classrooms for in person instruction within two weeks. Interim superintendent of schools Jeff Blank and Chief Academic Officer Dr Kim Kalbaugh presented the system’s return to school plan- which began with a detailed presentation from the Allegany County Health Department. Police respond to domestic disturbance, arrest wanted man

On Tuesday, September 8th, 2020 the Cumberland Police Department responded to a Harding Avenue residence for the report of a male violating a protective order.  When officers arrived, they observed the male in question who was identified as Antonio Maurice Smith.  Officer knew that Smith had an active arrest warrant for violating the protective order the day before.  Upon seeing officers, Smith attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended on the open warrant.  Once he was in custody, Smith became uncooperative causing a disturbance and resisting officers’ attempts to place him in a transport vehicle.  He was served the…

Justice asks for patience during virtual instruction phase

Children returned to classes for the start of the school year throughout West Virginia on Tuesday. In nine of the state's 55 counties, students began the year with remote learning due to the coronavirus pandemic. The state issued an updated color-coded map Saturday night showing the nine counties in either orange or red, meaning public schools were prohibited from conducting face-to-face instruction. Proposed Bill Would Give ‘Hero Pay’ To Hospital Workers

Hospital workers out front in the battle against the COVID-19 pandemic would receive “hero” pay, or bonuses, under a bill proposed by a Maryland representative. Democratic Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger of Maryland’s Second Congressional District plans to roll out his proposal on Thursday, The Baltimore Sun reported, citing a news release from the congressman’s office on Tuesday. The plan would provide hazard pay to doctors, nurses, specialists and non-medical staffs in hospitals such as custodians who work in close proximity to COVID-19 patients within federally-designated virus hotspots, the news release said.
