The Maryland State Fire Marshal's office is investigating a fire that was first reported to the Allegany County Joint Communications Center just after 11 p.m. on Thursday, according to officials. "Callers reported being able to see the flames and glow of the fire from a great distance," Lt. Todd Bowmam, public information officers for the Allegany County Department of Emergency Services said. "Firefighters remained on the scene for approximately three hours at the two-story duplex." Terps Suspend Athletic Activities After Surge In Positive Coronavirus Tests
The University of Maryland suspended athletics training activities due to a spike in positive coronavirus tests. On Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, the university screened 501 student-athletes. In all, 46 student-athletes on 10 different teams have tested positive. They will be tested again Tuesday. Court Blocks Trump Administration Abortion Rules In Maryland
A divided federal appeals court on Thursday upheld a lower court’s decision blocking the enforcement in Maryland of Trump administration rules that prohibit taxpayer-funded family planning clinics in the Title X program from making abortion referrals. The Richmond, Virginia-based 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed an existing permanent injunction. It wrote that the administration’s rules “failed to recognize and address the ethical concerns of literally every major medical organization in the country” and “arbitrarily estimated the cost” of implementing part of the rules. Man Arrested on Domestic Disturbance Downtown
On Thursday, September 3rd, 2020 the Cumberland Police Department responded to the area of E. Harrison Street for the report of a domestic disturbance. When officers arrived, contact was made with a female with visible injuries to her face and neck. A witness in the area told officers that he saw a male suspect chocking the female and pushing her to the ground. The suspect was identified as George Lester Harman Jr. who was also present when officers arrived. Harman was arrested and charged with assault and reckless endangerment. Oakland Man Arrested on Warrants, CDS Violations
An Oakland Maryland man was arrested Thursday morning by Garrett County Sheriff’s Deputies on multiple Failure to Appear (FTA) warrants. Bradley Lee Alexander, age 44, of Oakland was arrested on Decatur Street in Oakland on the strength of the two FTA Garrett County District Court warrants. One of the FTA warrants was for failing to appear for CDS violations and the other was for Unauthorized Use of a Credit Card and Theft. Justice announces regulatory change for broadband expansion
West Virginia Governor Jim Justice announced an executive order Thursday to remove the regulatory cap amount of money that can come to the state from the FCC for expanded broadband. Justice said the FCC created the Rural Digital Opportunity Fund to fund high speed broadband to rural areas and that he would like $766 million to come to the state, but the cap is currently $50 million with a limit of $10 million per entity.
