Charles “Chuck” Moran has been named acting principal at Allegany High School, replacing Heidi Laupert, who retired. Moran began his career at ACPS in 2002. Since then, he has served as a county math specialist at the elementary level before moving into administrative roles. He has held the title of Assistant Principal at multiple schools, with the most recent being Allegany High School. Moran will be holding the Acting Principal position through the end of the 2024-2025 academic school year.
All after school activities for Allegany County Public Schools are canceled for tonight, February 11, 2025. The school board will meet in executive session and the public meeting originally scheduled for tonight has been postponed until next Tuesday.
The City of Cumberland has now closed the CSX underpass downtown. The underpass, a means to get downtown when there are trains at the Baltimore Street crossing, has been a subject of debate and concern for years due its poor condition, filth, and perceived danger for pedestrians. The city will determine its future in coming months.
On Monday, February 10, 2025 at approximately 12:44 PM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a business in the first block of Greene Street for a shoplifting complaint. The staff reported to police that the suspect stole merchandise from the store and fled the area towards Washington Street. An officer located the suspect, Kayden Brewington, running from Cumberland Street onto the Market Street bridge. When the officer began to exit his patrol vehicle, Brewington pulled the stolen item from his pants and threw it on the ground. The officer was able to catch up to Brewington and take…
Allegany College of Maryland offers a unique program that has been in existence for decades. Marie Miller is the Forestry Program Director at the college and she said the program is an attractive one in this era of emphasis on ecology and environmental impact studies. Miller stressed that outdoor experiences are key in the forestry program at ACM.
On Monday, February 10, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department served a criminal summons on Macy Wilson. The summons was issued in connection with a hit and run investigation from November 24, 2024. On that date at approximately 2:56 PM, police responded to Boone Street for a hit and run that occurred the previous night. The victims reported that their vehicles were struck by another vehicle. A suspect was developed and identified as Macy Wilson. After further investigation, police filed for charges against Wilson at the District Court of Allegany County. State Senator Mike McKay is sponsoring Senate Bill 398 in Annapolis. Last week McKay testified in the Judicial Proceedings Committee and he outlined the need for second chances for people who violate the law. After three years, those with misdemeanors would have their records cleared automatically. McKay noted that in his own business, he has hired people with prior convictions. Most notable was the hiring of Arthur Bremer, who had been imprisoned for shooting Alabama Governor George Wallace in 1972 in Laurel, MD.
