National Night Out Tuesday

Cumberland will be celebrating National Night Out along with cities across the country on Tuesday evening.  Events will be taking place along East First Street near the Salvation Army beginning at 5pm.  Exhibits, demonstrations, giveaways, games and the opportunity to interact with council members, law enforcement and fire personnel highlight the evening along with the national porchlight campaign – porch lights on at dusk and off at dawn to increase safety and reduce criminal activity. WCBC Radio will be providing reports from the event through the evening.

College, Hospital Team Up For Jobs and Training

The presidents of Allegany College of Maryland and UPMC Western Maryland are teaming up this week for “Start Here, Work Here” – a special career event taking place on Wednesday at ACM’s Bob Kirk Arena.  People seeking jobs or a career change can apply for open positions at UPMC as well as get interview and job tips and talk with ACM Admissions counselors. Aerial Rescue For Injured Rock Climber In West Virginia

Maryland State Police Aviation Command (MSPAC) performed an aerial hoist rescue on Saturday after a rock climber was injured in West Virginia. On August 2, at approximately 2:20 p.m., rescue personnel from Pendleton County, WV, were dispatched to a remote area on Seneca Rocks for an injured person that fell while rock climbing. Due to the victim’s remote location, extended extrication time, and the nature of their injuries, Maryland State Police Aviation Command was requested to perform an aerial hoist rescue. Trooper 5, the MSP helicopter based in Cumberland, MD, was dispatched to the mission by the SYSCOM Duty Officer….

Evacuation at Keyser Nursing Facility

A fire at a Keyser nursing facility forced the evacuation of over 100 residents.  Keyser Healthcare, located on Southern Drive, called in the fire at 8:20 p.m. Saturday.  Three residents were treated for smoke inhalation at Potomac Valley Hospital.  All patients were evacuated by 9:30 p.m. with housing being sought at other facilities.

Local Pastor Dies

A longtime local pastor died last week while on vacation with his family.  Reverend Eric Ruble of Ridgeley died at the age of 52.  Pastor Ruble has been at Trinity Lutheran Church on North Centre Street for 23 years.  Friends will be received at Adams Family Funeral Home Tuesday with the funeral service Wednesday at the church.

BENCH WARRANT SERVED On Saturday, August 2, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department served a bench warrant on Brittany Rice.  The warrant was issued as the result of Rice failing to appear in court on an original charge of Driving without a license.  She was arrested and later seen by a District Court Commissioner for a bond hearing.  At the conclusion, Rice was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center without bond. Governor Pauses Federal Hiring Program

A program launched by the state of Maryland to employ federal workers who have lost their jobs is now on hold.  Governor Moore launched the program to help those laid off by the Trump administration – Maryland so far has lost over 12,000 federal jobs. That program came to a halt this week after pushback from mostly Republicans saying it was hypocritical to be hiring anyone if the state had a hiring freeze in effect.  Data on the hiring program showed that only 17 former federal employees had been hired by the state since February.

National Night Out Celebrated Tuesday

National Night Out will be observed this coming Tuesday in South Cumberland. The annual event highlights law enforcement and community programs. .  A special free swim and movie night is planned for Monday starting at 6:30 at Constitution Park Pool. On Tuesday, the public is invited to 701 East First Street to see exhibits, demonstrations and meet law enforcement, council members and other community leaders.  WCBC will provide live reports from the event through the evening.

Moore-Miller Administration Convenes Public Safety Partners to Promote Successful Reentry for Formerly Incarcerated Marylanders

Governor Wes Moore today joined elected leaders in Baltimore City to participate in a simulation illustrating the reentry challenges that Marylanders face following incarceration.
