CDS Arrest Near Queen City Drive
On Friday, December 20, 2024 at approximately 12:00 PM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department were conducting a foot patrol in the area of Queen City Drive when they a observed a male subject with suspected drug paraphernalia in his hands. The subject was identified as Gary Trenter II. A subsequent search of Trenter’s person revealed that he was in possession of suspected methamphetamine. Trenter was arrested and transported to police headquarters. He was issued criminal citations and released pending trial. Criminal Summons Served Over Greene St. Assault
On Friday, December 20, 2024, the Cumberland Police Department served a criminal summons on Darryl Powell Jr. The summons was issued as the result of an incident that occurred on December 15, 2024 at approximately 10:27 PM when officers responded to a business in the 200 block of Greene Street for an assault. Police contacted the alleged victim who reported that he was assaulted by Powell. After further investigation, police filed for charges against Powell at the District Court of Allegany County. Trespassing Arrest on Oldtown Road
On Friday, December 20, 2024 at approximately 7:30 AM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a residence in the 1600 block of E. Oldtown Rd. for David McMillan trespassing. Police confirmed that McMillan was not allowed at the location. Officers located McMillan at the property and placed him under arrest. A search of McMillan’s person revealed that he was in possession of suspected controlled dangerous substance paraphernalia. David was issued two criminal citations and released pending trial. Saturday Is Presents For Paws Event
Saturday is the Allegany County Animal Shelter’s annual Presents For Paws Event, starting at 11am. The shelter, located on Furnace Street in Cumberland is welcoming the community to bring donations of food, blankets, toys, and treats and meet some of animal residents. Visitors can drop off donations and make some new furry friends!
Maryland State Police Prepare for Holiday Travel
Maryland State Police will increase highway safety patrols over the next two weeks as millions of Marylanders hit the roads for holiday travel. Troopers from all 23 barracks will conduct saturation patrols and checkpoints focused on impaired, aggressive and distracted driving. The State Police Impaired Driving Reduction Effort (SPIDRE) team, which focuses on identifying impaired drivers, will also be on patrol. Enforcement efforts and the SPIDRE team are bolstered by funds from the Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration’s (MVA) Highway Safety Office. Perez Estavon James Extradited To Allegany County
Perez Estavon James, 32, of Glen Burnie was extradited from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The Allegany County Warrant Unit transported to the Allegany County Detention Center where he is being held without bond pending bail review in District Court for the charges of Escape-Second Degree related to an incident from June 2023.
Bench Warrants Served
Thomas Scannell Jr, 64 of Cumberland, was served two (2) District Court bench warrants for Violation of Probation. Scannell was previously convicted of Sex Offense 4th Degree – Sexual Contact and sentenced to a 1-year jail term with all but 1-day suspended and 3-years supervised probation; and Assault-Second Degree and was sentenced to a 2-year jail term with 3-years Supervised Probation. Scannell is being held without bond at the Allegany County Detention Center.
Gov. Justice Appoints Darren Thorne to the Fifteenth Senatorial District
Gov. Jim Justice announced today he has appointed Darren Thorne to the Fifteenth Senatorial District seat to fill the vacancy created by Charles Trump, who resigned earlier this month to be sworn in as a newly-elected state Supreme Court justice. This seat covers all of Hampshire and Morgan Counties and parts of Berkeley and Mineral Counties.
Rose’s Plaza Destruction of Property Arrest
On Friday, December 20th, 2024, at 130am, the Cumberland Police Department responded to Rose’s Plaza on Queen City Drive for the report of a destruction of property. Upon arrival, officers contacted employees of the business who advised they were cleaning the business in preparation of closing. They advised that a male subject approached the building and began pounding on the windows and yelling to let him in. When the employees refused to open the doors, the male subject broke a window. Officers were able to locate the subject, Kevin Paul Bailey, 37, of Cumberland MD, and place him under arrest…
Senate Passes Chesapeake National Recreation Act
The Chesapeake National Recreation Act passed the U.S. Senate unanimously on Wednesday, a bill introduced in 2023 by Maryland’s Senator Chris Van Hollen and Congressman John Sarbanes. The Act will increase federal resources for conservation, celebrate the Chesapeake’s history, and support economic growth in the region. Van Hollen says the CRNA unites a number of Chesapeake Bay properties for future preservation… “The Chesapeake National Recreation Act would unite voluntarily contributed sites and iconic Chesapeake Bay properties under the operation of the National Park Service in what we call a string of pearls.”
