Gov. Justice declares Juneteenth 2024 as State holiday in West Virginia
Gov. Jim Justice issued a proclamation, officially declaring Juneteenth 2024 as a State holiday in West Virginia. Juneteenth, which is recognized on June 19 each year, celebrates the ending of slavery in the United States. The Juneteenth State holiday this year will be observed on Wednesday, June 19, 2023, as a full-day holiday for all public employees of the State. Gov. Baltimore Avenue Assault Arrest
On Saturday, June 8, 2024 at approximately 1:08 PM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a residence in the 400 block of Baltimore Avenue for a male subject with violent tendencies. The caller wanted him to leave the property. Police arrived and contacted the male subject who was identified as Garrett Flanagan-Wagaman. Flanagan-Wagaman was armed with brass knuckles. He was ordered to put down the brass knuckles to which he complied. Police then contacted an assault victim who had sustained significant injuries. Governor Wes Moore Boosting Wind Energy
Governor Wes Moore signed a memorandum of understanding Friday with the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management to advance Maryland’s offshore wind development. The agreement will help make Maryland more competitive by building a more robust supply chain and creating more jobs for Marylanders. The governor was joined at the State House for the signing by U.S. Department of the Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen, and Congressman John Sarbanes.

BENCH WARRANT SERVED On Friday, June 7, 2024, the Cumberland Police Department served a bench warrant on David McMillan. The warrant was issued as the result of McMillan failing to appear in court. He was originally charged with Burglary-4th Degree-Store. McMillan was arrested and transported to Central Booking. He was later seen by a District Court Commissioner and held at the Allegany County Detention Center on a Temporary Commitment-Recalcitrant. Abi Britton Wins Statewide Recognition
Allegany High School’s Abi Britton has been named the Gatorade State Player of the Year in softball. Britton pitched the Campers to a state title with an 18-0 record and a batting average of .590 with 10 home runs and 32 RBI.
Free Fishing This Weekend in West Virginia
West Virginia Governor Jim Justice has announced that today and Sunday will be free fishing days in the state. The goal is to encourage young people and their families to enjoy the outdoors together this weekend.
Longtime Allegany County Educator Gary Durr Dies
A fixture at Allegany College of Maryland, Gary Durr, died Wednesday at the age of 82. Durr joined the faculty in 1977 and later served as Dean of Continuing Education. He also served as interim president of the college from July, 2010, until March, 2011. Durr was a history teacher and guidance counselor at Allegany High School prior to his employment at Allegany Community College. Funeral services will be conducted at noon Tuesday at Cornerstone Baptist Church. Adams Family Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
