Underpass Care A Continuing Concern
A clean and green downtown Cumberland will be ready for its ribbon-cutting in November, but just beyond the end of Baltimore Street is a problem the city and community have been dealing with for decades – the railroad underpass at Queen City Drive. ACPS Announces New Transportation Supervisor
The Allegany County Board of Education has announced the hiring of a new Supervisor of Transportation. With more, here’s WCBC’s Tony Orndoff… Michael Mathews has been appointed as the new Supervisor of Transportation for Allegany County Public Schools, according to a statement released by the Board of Education on Wednesday. Mathews assumed the role effective June 1. He has been a county school bus drive since 2003 and served as the Assistant Supervisor of Transportation since 2019. Mathews is also a state-certified driver instructor for both classroom and behind the wheel instruction.

First Heat-Related Death of 2024 in Maryland
The first heat-related death of 2024 has been reported in Maryland. A 59-year old Prince George’s County man died in the past week – no further details were provided. The Maryland Department of Health encourages citizens to cope with extreme heat spells by staying hydrated, staying out of direct sun, and to schedule physical activities in the morning or evening when temps are cooler. There were 9 heat-related deaths in Maryland last year.

Associated Charities Disbanding
One of Allegany County’s oldest charities will cease to operate at the end of June. Associated Charities, founded in 1910, has been asked to vacate their offices in the Department of Social Services building. That, coupled with dwindling funding, has caused the organization to make the decision to close. Deanna Clark, Executive Director, says the decision was not an easy one… Clark says the number of individuals they have been able to help has been affected.
