Potomac State Wins First NJCAA World Series Game in History

Chloe Greise passes the 2000 mark in strike outs, while Alexa Shoemaker hits a two run homer and Emily Horn has a solo homerun as PSU Lady Catamunts defeat Macomb 6-4. This is the first win for Potomac State in the NJCAA World Series Games.

Western Regional Office Selection for Deputy State Fire Marshall Announced

Master Deputy State Fire Marshal and Bomb Technician Ed Ernst has been selected as the Western Regional Office nominee for Deputy State Fire Marshal of the Year. He will join other investigators chosen for the 2023 James C. Robertson Deputy State Fire Marshal of the Year Award during the Maryland Fireman's Convention in Ocean City next month. Ernst's criminal case closure rate exceeded the national average at 56%, and he led the agency with 13 arrests in 2023.

Progress on Empty Building Lots Moving Along

One developer in Cumberland is making progress on some empty building lots in South Cumberland. Teabow Residential of Washington, D.C. is redeveloping property where the city demolished dilapidated housing. Emergency Lane Closure on I-81 South

Crews will be closing the right lane on southbound I-81 in Halfway to complete some emergency pavement repairs. The work started at 11:30 a.m. and is expected to take approximately 6 hours to complete. 

HOLD Status At Braddock MS This Morning

Allegany County Schools reported that today, May 20, 2024, Braddock Middle School was placed in a brief HOLD status due to a medical emergency. First Responders arrived on scene and provided medical service. School administrators gave the “All Clear” and the instructional day resumed as normal.

Commissioner Caporale Happy with Fire Union meeting last Friday

Allegany County government officials met with the Firefighters Union Friday to discuss options to avoid a $2 million dollar budget cut to county emergency medical services. Allegany County Commissioner, David Caporale joined WCBC's Dave Norman program this morning saying that he was very happy with Friday's meeting and that it was very productive, everybody came to the table, piece something together and compromised to focus on ways to continue to grow the department while keeping it more affordable and manageable at the same time. Members of the Fire Union will meet after 10:00 a.m. today to make a final decision.

Construction on Friendsville Road Bridge Begins this Week

Construction begins this week on a $7.7 million replacement of the Friendsville Road bridge over Buffalo Run in Garrett County. Weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed in 2025. A temporary bridge is being constructed for motorists to use while the new bridge is built. A new traffic signal will also be in place to guide motorists through the construction. The new bridge should be complete in 2025.

Cumberland Clock Being Planned

“Make Time For Your Community!” is the theme behind the new Cumberland Clock being planned for the downtown area.  To be located in Hendershot Park at the intersection of Baltimore, Washington, and Greene Streets, the clock is the effort of Let’s Beautify Cumberland.  Greg Hendershot, whose father Butch was the first chair of the organization, said the clock is American made by Electric Time in Massachusetts and an image of what the timepiece will look like should be available for the public to see… Fundraising for the project is now in progress.
